Although I had only a short time to operate, this was my first IRAU outing, and with my (very
modest) newly configured "paper chasing" and "DX chasing" station: IC7300, LDG AT-200ProII
Autotuner, Diamond SX-200 meter (yes, built-in redundancy was planned), and a refurbished Cushcraft
R3 tri-band vertical. HOA restrictions abound. Working on a 40 meter option to replace the
raingutter. The fast CW challenges my copying skills as well as enhancing operations with N1MM. I
generally operate QRP, mostly for stateside contacts, but the 100W station is designed for what the
big guns refer to as "low power." Learning the ins and outs of "niche" contesting (e.g., TB class),
SOTA, POTA, IOTA, local paper, and DX. Appreciate the "professionalism" of the IRAU amateurs in fast
CW contest mode under challenging band conditions and working low power stations. Great fun!

This year I was been QRV from the summer holiday location in Bavaria
in south Germany. Indoor small vertical antenna and IC-7000 with
low power, bad SWR. I fight for each QSO. I think I tried to work
DA0HQ at first on 40m SSB around 1 hour calling. Sometimes the OP
called ALPHA ALPHA.., I came back with my call DJ1AA/P but he called
already CQ DA0HQ.. OK: 40m SSB QRM.. I had no QRM and DA0HQ around S9.
No QSO with DA0HQ in SSB possible. Finally I reached the 40m CW station,
in this case OK, but I hoped to get more QSOs, but no way from
the location closed to the border to austria in south Germany.

I just had a couple of hours time for the participation on Sunday morning. But it was a real fun to
operate CW only. More than 400 QSOs came into the log and it was a pleasure to meet many CW and
contest friends. The condx were surprisingly good for contacts on 15 and 10m - got many Ws and VEs
into the log but only one JA on 15m.

This year was first time I have been working from may new mobile radio shack. This is old army car
originally devoted for electronic warfare (but that was 30 years ago because the car is such old).
I have all the necessary equipment installed (radio, power supply, pneumatic mast and the beer
fridge) so the only job was to erect some antennas in the field (Spiderbeam 40-20-15-10, GP 80-49,
dipoles 160-80). It took two days as most of the work I was doing alone.
Contest was great as usual. Propagation not such good like last year (less DX stations done) but
still on QRP I managed to make some North/South American stations and Far East. Many thanks to all
participants especially for patience for QRP stations :))

Here we have a hot, tropically humid summer in the USA Northeast. A
dew point of 80 degrees -- WHAT?! The best cure for that was to enjoy
my air conditioned radio room and have some fun working the IARU HF
World Championship contest. Lots of fun.

Enjoyable contest. The only annoying thing was when a foreign station was asking for only one call
to be clarified, many other hams jumped in to give their call signs. Some operators scolded the
hams who exhibited bad behavior.

It would be nice if proper elicit would be practiced by our U.S.A hams. I noticed this in both the
IARU and the Field Day contests. Maybe more education would help.
Thanks, K2HA

K3CCR
K3CCR is the club station at the Collington continuing-care
retirement community at FM 18OW in MD, just east of DC. N3UM and
W3GB operated Multi-1 HP in the July 2020 IARU contest. Our goal
was to beat our previous-best result, in 2019. We did that; got
53% more Q pts and 11% more mults to claim a 70% higher score.
We did again what worked before in IARU; do mostly CW, best band
is 20m, 2nd best is 40m, get lots of mults and 5-point Qs. For
the first 15 hrs. 12-03Z we alternated 2.5-hr. shifts. This let
us rest, eat, do chores, and come back fresh. We stayed on 20m.
till 22Z; 10 hrs, 93% CW. Great condx, Kp = 0 or 1. At start
N3UM ran for 22 CW Qs in 20 min; 2 were JAs! N3UM and W3GB then
clicked spots, focusing on 5-pt. Qs and mults. At 17Z we had 128
Qs and 408 Q pts, 3.1 pts/Q. In the next 2 shifts 17-22Z, 20m.
was at its best to EU; we got 193 Qs at 4.1 pts/Q. At 22Z we had
321 Qs, 1195 Q pts, and 69 mults. We got on 40m. for 2 shifts at
22Z. Band was great; FY, KH6, KL, UA9. Got 167 Qs on 40 plus 14
on 20m. At 03Z we had 502 Qs, 1858 Q pts, and 123 mults. W3GB
quit to sleep and return early. N3UM stayed and made 70 Qs on
80m and 12 on 160m. Not great, but some low-band Qs and mults
were good since our 15/10m. ant. was faulty. After a few last 40
and 20m. Qs N3UM quit at 0555Z with 630 Qs, 2276 Q pts, and 165
mults. Bandmaps showed no more mults or 5-pt. Qs left. W3GB came
back 0815-1159Z and got 53 Qs plus ZL, FK, and 3 VK zones, and 3
HQs on 40m. In the last 15 min, he got DU and SV HQs and a 4th
VK zone on 20m. to take us to our final claimed score.

My Flex-6600M is on its way for repair, so I had to bring in my IC-7300 for backup. I lost a lot of

The ity-bity panadaper on rigs with knobs is an improvement over the past, but comes no where near
the ease of a large screen panadapter.

During the day the bands were not good but come sunset time they sure picked up. Will be glad when I
get my beam back up. Only used my Inverted vee and vertical. Still did ok.

K6NR
Great contest. Conditions were pretty good given where we are in the
solar cycle, although a little weird. I didn't get started until 4
hours into the contest, and 20 meters wasn't very good at the time.
I heard Eu, strong HQ stations mostly, but they had a hard time
hearing me. I was able to run stateside pretty well, on 20, and on
15, even on 10 later in the day. Stations were sparse on 10 and 15,
but there were actually Eu on both, easily workable. I wasn't
expecting that. I have multiple local noise sources, with a new one
showing up in the Northeast, the worse direction for it. But it was intermittent, as was my pulsing
noise in the Northwest.

20 meters was great later on Saturday, Eu were stronger, plentiful
and hearing me, and I was able to run stateside. Worked some 80, but
not much over the noise on 160. 40 was good, Eu HQ stations and for
stateside. I was running stateside with an occasional DX, 100 an hour
when I decided to call it a night at 0630. I got back up for the last
40 minutes of the contest. 40 was hot to the pacific, worked another
70 stations before it was over.

The conditions and activity made for a fun contest. Thanks for all
the QSOs! Dana

Station: K3, KPA1500;
Antennas: 160 Inverted L, 80 meter vertical over 67 radials;
40 meter 4 square; 4L@60 on 20, 5L@50' on 15, 5L @ 48' on 10;
various receive antennas that don't do much in tons of noise...

Low dipole only for antenna. No yagi--I am installing a new
tower.

K7VIT
Started out to do a mixed-mode effort from my relatively little
pistol station. Band conditions seemed in the tank, so I decided
to stick with CW because of better gas mileage. Thankfully, the
conditions seemed to improve into Saturday evening local time.
Thanks to all who answered my calls. 73, Jerry

K7XC
In the process of taking the station down to move. All that was in the air was a 30M vert, 3ele 15m
Yagi at 30ft, and a 17m Inv Vee at 26ft which I used on 20M with the onboard tuner in the barefoot
Flex3000. 20M yagi was up at 12ft ready to take down as the AB577 Mast was completely lowered but
had no feedline to it. Nice to see 15M full of CW activity till the band faded in the late
afternoon. Heard many EU stations on 15M but none heard me at 90W level as I sold the KW amp to
cover the moving costs. Soon I Will be QRP from an apt with hidden antennas. Not looking forward to
it but you do what you have to when your landlord informs you he is selling the house out from under
you. 73s and GL Everyone!

K8GL
Good condx and participation! 10 and 15 open to Europe...? Outstanding!

K8LF
I operated about 1/4 of the contest. From the start 8 AM US EST till about 7 PM and the bands were
not good. Things picked up in the evening US time. I could have done better to skip operating at
all during the day on Saturday and just started at 7 PM in the evening. I need to move my antenna
switch closer to my operating position. I switched antennas very often with the bad propagation.
Still great fun and good practice for my CW skills. I like how many HQ stations were on.

K8TE
Lots of fun until an alien infected my computer causing it to
send callers' callsigns over and over and over again. With our
evaporative cooler out, the PC gone nuts, and the shack
temperature worse than the NM desert during FD, I quit early and
enjoyed some time with my lovely, supporting spouse.
At least I made a few contacts.

Thanks to all who worked me. I've since
fixed the problem (Ethernet RFI ingress that didn't happen
earlier in the day) and am ready for the next contest. I'll be
more ready once I have a tower or two in the air, and not on the
ground. Low dipoles make it tough under current conditions, but
not impossible. 73, Bill, K8TE

The VE9RAC op on 10m was sending HQ instead of the correct RAC as
the other RAC stations used. I listened to him send this to
several other stations. Presumably his log will reflect this and
everyone who logged HQ as I did will receive proper credit.
WD0BC was clearly confused about the proper exchange for this
contest and was sending 5 for his zone. I had him repeat it.
Clearly a mistake on his part. Log checking will no doubt pick
up on this and decrement my multipliers accordingly but I wasn't
about to try and fool the N1MM+ program and mess things up
further. I don't know how many other logs he will appear in. Not
the first time someone sent the wrong exchange I'm sure.

KE4FVU
Thanks for having this contest. I had a good time in the contest. I did many things that I've never
done before in this contest. I made contacts in Alaska and West Virginia. I worked Germany and a few
other countries. I think I learned a little bit more about using my station to work DX. My station
has limitations but I was still able to make a lot of contacts. It was a fun time.

Comments:

Very little Phone operation for me in this one
I am usually a very aggressive Phone op (as in I concentrate on that Mode)
This was mostly a CW session for me with a token number of Phone QSO's during
the last hour
I picked up W1AW/4 on 40m and 20m Phone during that last hour
I feel good about the 300 plus Q's as I need to put some more sweat equity in my
antenna farm :) and 300 Q's was my Goal for this one.
Thanks for the Fun and the Q's
Cheers!

Interesting contest and good condition although I had not many
contacts outside of Europe. On the other hand I had contacts on

more then I have ever seen since I started to participate in

MY FIRST IARU HF CONTEST

N1FR
For most of the day it was obvious that my calls to Europe on 20 were simply zooming thru the AWOL
ionosphere into outer space. Maybe they will return for next year's contest.

N1YIS
First IARU contest that I have worked in a while. It was great to everyone on! I have been testing a
new to me Cobralite Jr antenna. It was the primary antenna for this contest. Discovered my Icom 756
didn't want to talk so I grabbed the old trusty Kenwood TS440 with a new desk microphone. This
arrangement appeared to work for me using only the antenna tuner in the 440. Also I used for the
first time SKOOKUMLOGGER 2.1.9 with my Macbook for logging.

It was really great to get on the air and make some contacts. Thanks to all who heard me!

Good openings from NJ to East Europe

N2JNR
Definitely had a lot of fun yesterday, with a few breaks throughout the day.  40 started off nice,
though the noise was really rough for me for the majority of the day/contest.  Must have been some
grow lights as most of the noise went away at/around 8pm on 20.   Then...  Literally felt like a
kid in a candy story as the conditions really opened up and started experiencing some good DX from
all angles.  Reminded me of conditions when I got my license in the late 80s on the east coast with
the european opening.   I also made my first contact with Israel in CW (took a bit but finally got
thru) as well as an additional 36 other countries.   I was laughing out loud throughout this
opening out of happiness.   If I didn't have an early morning zoom meeting today I would have
absolutely stuck thru the contest.

score from K1IMI which had the advantage of location (proximity
to Europe). More Q's, but fewer mults (more countries, but fewer
HQ stns).Great rates in late afternoon when Europe propagation
really opened up. I miss the little "countries" like HB0, C31,

go out and put them on the air, especially with the pandemic
restricting travel.

QRP. One Half Watt to 20 foot end-fed wire thrown
into a tree out my window. Conditions poor.
Made just under half the contacts I made last year
with identical set-up. Not much DX but I managed
ONE contact in Europe, plus KH6 and a couple ZL.
In and out of the shack, and checked 10m and 15m
frequently with no significant signals heard.
Thanks to all for the QSOs and your patience with
my QRP signals.
GO ARIZONA OUTLAWS! 73, John N6HI

Heard the contest while doing a COVID troll through the bands. Decided
to give out a few points. logged my contacts on a pad of post its.
Operated from a secondary QTH, so the rig was an ICOM7300 and a
94'dipole fed with ladder line (ZS6BKW dipole). The band was very
noisy and still heard lots of stations, small effort, small results
but had fun anyways. see ya on the next one.73 Barry

Well that was a fun summer distraction, in a world filled with stress and
anxiety the new normal to lock into local combat via remote operation in a
contest that forces the N6RO team out of our comfort zone, and into the (rather
draconian) M/S category where 1 operator is qrv at any one point of time, and 10
minute rules prevent SO2R operation implicitly even in band/mode.

As you can imagine, this was a grand training event for many of our team who
have been conditioned for M/M and SO2R operation. First we congratulate our local
hilltop competitors operating as K6EZ for taking and maintaining a lead early
Saturday through the contest.. really kept us motivated.

We decided to enter the M/S category to make sure anyone in our group got some
good air time this year, and to offer an opportunity to some of our ops to
operate bands not usually available to them. Our station is not fully
operational with new rotors in place requiring electrical enhancement to rotate
properly on 20, and a stubborn intermittent prob with 20 stack match. given
this, we set our goal meter at "Fun" and try "1 mpoint"

Despite a fully operational 15m stack, and as we watched the online scoreboard,
it became apparent by mid day saturday that we had made some strategic choices
that haunted us for the rest of the test, not spending enough time collecting
qso volume on 15m as we experimented with the 10 min rule and how to apply it.
This put us in a chasing position with our hilltop friends for the rest of the
test.

Band conditions were remarkably good for a Mid summer test, with all of the
bands open at some level for some amount of time. 15m was surprisingly good,
and despite the expected noise, 40 and 20 were ok as well.

murphy presented us with a couple of unique challenges, A: a failed 20m stack
match rendering middle ant inop, and B: a strange network problem with the ISP
serving the station, causing any op on the AT&T network an inability to
connect, this presented in the middle of our 1 op that had AT&T requiring an
immediate and unplanned substitute operator. 1st world remote problems hi hi.

other than those exceptions, I kicked off the test at 5 am local for the first 2
hours on 160 > 80 > 40 and we passed from op to op every 2 or so hours
giving everyone 2 X 2 hour shifts with a couple exceptions in 24 hs.

Thanks to all for the QSO's, Congrats to Oliver, Denny and team for offering us
continued motivation through great operation. Congrats to our team for trying
hard! We had a great time, good runs, made our Megapoint and advanced the
training of our team and exercised the station significantly. Talking to the
group on slack, we all had lots of fun!

Radios:
Flex 6600-M X 2 running SmartLink Remote for Pan Adapters and RRC for audio and

Amps: 4O3A Power Genius XL X 2
Antennas: 5 X 5 X 5 on 10, 15 and 20(mid 20 inop) 4 X 4 on 40 4sq on 80 and
160.

4 remote ops with max of 1 onsite for a couple of shifts to maintain social
distancing.

Special thanks to Ken N6RO for his team instruction, wisdom, chair time and use
of the station as always, and for allowing a M/S to happen from Radio Oakley.

This is our new established baseline to work from. thanks to all for the qso's,
73 and Seeya next time!

An old school attempt this time out with a 90 watt Icom-IC-735,Vectronics Manual tuner for 15 and 20
meters only,a Heil Pro Micro Headset,and a ZS6BKW flattop up 40 feet,running N-S at 6,053 feet
elevation from Grid Square DN-71od in Laramie County,Wyoming. I had some good runs on 20 and 40, but
10 Meters was dead as a hammer, and I only worked 3 Ops on 15. I had no rig control to my logging
program, which combined my limited operating time of 9 hours, really dropped my score, compared to my
last year's second place Single Op Low Power Phone win for U.S. and Canada.40 was noisy, and 20 had
significant signal fading at times! Lots of Ops were saying QRZ? in the middle of their C.Q. calling
string, which causes others who only heard QRZ? to start calling early. A distubing contesting trend!
QRZ should always be the LAST thing you verbalize when you are running stations! Also, Ops answering
a running station should ONLY GIVE CALL,so that the running station can check for dupes, and then
give his or her exchange FIRST! Yet another bad operating habit that seems to show up more and more
with every passing year. Another fun "100 Watts and a Wire Adventure is in the books! 73, November

Got off to a slow start with weak propagation here in SFL. Figured it would be a losing effort for
me. But evening brought great condx with strong propagation to Europe and some S America areas. My
goal was to just beat my 2018 result. Thanks to everyone for helping me nearly double my 2018 score!
Now I've got some work to do in 2021. I can only imagine what it will be like once the solar cycle
swings back on our side. See you next year. 72.

My main rig, a Yaesu FT 1000MP failed after almost 25 years of faithful service the day before
"Canada Day". I substituted an Elecraft KX3 and a Yaesu FL7000 for 100 watts output. 20 meter phone
contacts were difficult. DX phone contacts were especially difficult. I don't remember a more
difficult phone event. 15 meters was interesting with its short skip contacts. No 10 meter contacts
were observed. I hope to be back next year.

erect new wire antenna for 160m and 80m but thanks to rain I have cancelled it. I like this contest
because of MIX category but because I was quite tired just before the contest, I decided for CW
unassisted - just to play a little. In the end I was almost whole contest sitting on the chair! The
choosen strategy payed-of and I am surprised with the result.

Again working from S54E contest location, using his OptiBeam for
upper 3 bands, loop for 40m, one vertical element of 4sq for 80m,
and vertical for 160m. Radio was my FT-2000, and SPE Expert 1,3K
linear. Plan was good, but weather played its own role. Two heavy
thunderstorms on Saturday evening, one after another took away 4
best hours of contesting. I had to disconnect everything, and sit
in the car, hopping that some lightning won't make any damage,
and waiting that thunderstorms to pass by. There was a lot of
rain, mixed with tiny hail, and strong winds. Looks like that
loop for 40m didn't survive, because with 100W it works, but with
higher power, SWR jumps up and down. So there I just collect with
LP what I heard. A lot of statics on lower bands also. All in
all, with this equipment and other conditions, I'm satisfied with
result!

This was my 3rd HF Contest, since getting my first HF Rig, as the 2020 Pandemic started. The Contest
provided a great opportunity to further my limited Contest skills; test my Icom IC-7300 Programmable
Voice functions; & integrate them with the N1MM Plus Logger Software. Thank you for these
opportunities & 73.

VE9RAC
The Radio Amateurs of Canada assigned the operation to ITU Zone 9
and our call signs were VA2RAC, VE9RAC and VO1RAC, with operators
VE2FK, VE9BK, VE9CB, VE9CD, VE9EX, VE9ML, VE9MO, VE9OA, VE9VIC,
and VO1HP. The local bands were reported as generally being
quiet; in central New Brunswick it was pouring rain. One
operator scrambled to get a new vertical ready and almost
doubled his previous number of QSOs in this contest. One
operator enjoyed 10 m and 15 m being open, but when followed by
all the 80 m CW QSOs, much of the 24 hours was used. The 160 m
CW QSOs were mostly at the noise level and required patience and
good ears. One group of CW operators did what they promised and
without comments pounded out a big score. We had range of
experience with contesting, especially this contest, and we
removed some QSOs due to known rule violations; more details were
submitted to the ARRL. One time, it was hilarious and we needed a
video conference to discuss it. Despite our mistakes with
experience, we had a great time. Furthermore, the operators with
less experience mentioned that they would like to try this again,
which is what this hobby is all about. Some further details are
at: https://brentpetersen.ca/ar/signup-IARU-HF-Contest-2020/

VK2GR
Excellent conditions with long band opening periods for 20m and 40m.
Noisy due to local electrical storms for 80m.
Poor conditions with QSB and weak signals for 15m.
Nothing heard on 10m or 160m.
Overall, an enjoyable and very good contest with an average of 51 QSOs per hour.
QTH: Rural NSW near the Tasman sea, 250km south of Sydney.
Thank you for all that called me and exchanged zone numbers in the 2020 IARU Contest.

VK2PN
Thank you all who called.
This time (despite that we are in the solar minimum still) it was fun. Started
little slow, but picked up the pace soon. Best time when the bands (both 40 and
20) were open to US and it was possible to work at very good rate. Signals were
strong, the noise not too high.
Regrettably not too many JA stations and EU was not represented here "down
under" as strong as expected. I guess that it was the conditions. I've
tried to run the predictions for the day and it did not match the reality.
It was good to hear all the "big guns". Thanks.
One happy contester

Not the best conditions but a lot of fun.

40m only. Very tough conditions. Spent most of my time on CW.
A few QSOs were made on SSB.
Spent a bit of time chasing digital contacts when I couldn't make contest QSOs.

My 15th QSO was with VE9RAC on 10m, who gave his exchange as “HQ”. I’m told he was in error

be penalized.

W5TJL
This was a fun contest. I didnt make a lot of QSOs but, I worked some great DX stations!

W5WZ
We began the contest operating as W5WZ, Multi/Single High Power.
At 14:38 UTC, we realized that we had violated the 10-minute band
rule by making in-band QSOs on the other mode. At that point,
we ceased operation as W5WZ. We then started the contest again
at approximately 1500 UTC operating as W5EA, Multi/Single High
Power, and continued until the end of the contest. Consequently,
we are submitting the W5WZ log as a Checklog. The mistake
occurred because we were intently focused on our first efforts at
interlocked high power in-band search and pounce, while
maintaining a run station. Our thoughts were to have as much
separation as possible between the transmitting frequencies, and
we incorrectly understood the Band Timer rule until we noticed
the N1MM+ band time resetting on each QSO/mode.

W6NS
Thank you for putting up with me, this is my first real contest in over three years. It is
different using low power, low antennas and a dummy load on 80m.

Condx not bad for solar minimum. Managed to get out with 100w and wire antennas, despite local
powerline QRN.

W7ZZ
Conditions weren't poor. For conditions to be poor, there had to be "conditions." Today, it was
like ground wave on 10 meters at noon == NO "conditions." I quit early. Had better things to do.

WQ6X
This was another ad-HOC portable operation from W7AYT's QTH in Concord.
While the main purpose was to join up with the NX6T crew remotely using
the on-site Elecraft K3/0, time was found to put WQ6X on the air from
this DX-Vortex site in Concord.
This weekend was FULL of surprises, the surprisingest being a 10-Meter
opening early Saturday afternoon; surprising because 15-meters was even
MORE DOA. Sweeping the 3.el Hygain Long John yagi from 300-degs to 120-degs
allowed me to watch the RBN stats and make an occasional QSO.
WQ6X was being heard throughout the Western U.S. yet there were NO
stations actually listening - Y'all missed out on some EASY multipliers.

This is an updated log. I realized that I made a mistake in the first one that I submitted.

A great part time contest - 10 meter had a nice summer E-skip opening to Europe that went on for a
good part of Saturday. 15 meters had good conditions to Europe as well. On Sunday morning I got
in an hour or so, worked a few VKs on 40, heard some JAs (I was too late to work them), and enjoyed
a nice Asian run mixed in with EU on 20 meters.

Participation seemed to be a record levels this year!!
