Pulled the plug early on the IARU HF Championship 2025.
Band conditions were worse than a broken SWR meter — just 24 hours of radio silence.
No propagation, no pileups, no fun.
We’ll try again next year and hope the Sun feels more cooperative.
Big thanks to the few signals that did sneak through — 73!Shalom

Only had a limited amount of time for this contest due to other
obligations in the afternoon and evening. As others have already
posted, band conditions were friggin horrible when the contest
started. I miss the band conditions we had last year, that was fun.
I did what I could and then pulled the plug to do the other crap
I had to do that day. It was frustrating this year.

Used a temporary antenna for the contest and the S9 QRM nearly killed it... But luckly, there was a
rain fall which brought down the noise a little. Also, I guess this will be my last contest in my
19, before the the july birthday. Thanks a lot for all the stations answering me!!!

My first ever ham radio competition!
20m SSB only. Logged by hand on paper. <100W. Had a great experience.
Used a Yaesu FT-857 and the ARRL EFHW antenna.
Worked some stations over 8000km -- a personal DX record!
I was surrounded by buildings from over 300 degrees -- tough conditions!
Had a blast. Looking forward to future contests!

Spending almost 18 hours time in seat, I had a lot of fun
in spite of conditions that reminded me of the upcoming solar minimum.
I'm one of the (few) people paying attention to rules generally,
but specifically lost 9 QSO points, 1 multi and 3% score
while searching and pouncing on QRGs forbidden by contest rule 6.3.
Well, that's what Cabrillo's X-QSO is good for.

Thank you to all for the contest. I had fun at pretty fair propagation
conditions. I did S & P only. Radio equipment is troubled - no CAT connection
from Radio to Logger, all I did manually with ears and fingers: All ports are not working, keying by
my electronic keyer (self-made 1987), decoding by listening with own ears created in 1947.
Now, I´m in good hope ; the new PC will unterstand his new job

And THAN - HURRAH it looks fine on the monitor,

Excellent start on 20 meters with 140 QSOs/hour, after which the
rate dropped to 50 QSOs/hour. In the evening, few QSOs on 80 meters
and only 7 on 160 meters. On Sunday, starting at 10:00 local time,
propagation opened on 15 and 10 meters with 170 QSOs/hour.
Unfortunately, I had to bring the end of the contest forward to 11:30
A few more QSOs than last year, but fewer areas and consequently a
lower final score. Total activity approximately 19 hours.

We run as HP, no spot assistance, no 160m, kind of wrtc style but with
better antennas.
We will not compete in any category, will send log as checklog.
The propagation was one not in favor of Dx through the north paths,
with the exception of some narrow windows on 20m after the sunset,
and 40m in the night.
Big absorption during the daytime. At some point 15m was kind of
"working weekday" nearly empty.
A strong short path opening (sporadic-e) allowed nice rates on 10-15-20
in the last 2 hours with Europeans.
Nice to work the GBxWT field stations. They had good signals in north
Italy, most of the time.
Thanks everyone for the QSOs, especially those that QSYd on request.

I just finished assembling my QMX+ transceiver from QRP Labs. At first, I just wanted to check if it
was working… but then I started making QSOs one after another on 20 meters! I couldn’t believe
it when stations answered my very first call, running just 3 watts and an EFHW vertical antenna. It
was incredible!
At some point, I completely forgot I was even operating QRP. I was calling like I was a big gun
station! It was pure fun from start to finish.
Next year, I plan to dedicate more time to the contest and increase my QSO count, using the same
setup. If this was just a test run… I can’t wait to see what happens with a bit more planning!

K3CCR
K3CCR is the club station at the Collington continuing-care
retirement community at FM 18OW in MD, just east of DC. In the
2025 IARU test N3UM and W5MPB operated Multi-1 HP Assisted. N3UM
did all CW, W5MPB all SSB. We did not expect to beat our 2024 IARU
claim; SFI was 130 this year vs 230+ in 2024, so we got 0.74 X the
QSO pts & 0.80 X the total mults for 0.59 X our 2024 score claim.
We alternated 3-hour shifts as before. EU gives the most 5-pt Qs &
HQs, but poor run rates; we both clicked spots. At start N3UM got
41 20-M Qs 1205-1312Z, then 16 15-M Qs and 26 more 20-M Qs for a
total 83 Qs by 1458Z. W5MPB 1504-1656Z band-hopped for 21 20-M Qs
& 17 15-M Qs. He then got 26 more 20-M Qs 1713-1750Z for a total
of 64. N3UM got 36 15-M Qs 1800-1932Z, then 55 20-M Qs 1942-2059Z
for a total of 91 Qs. W5MPB got 84 Qs on 20 M 2104-2355Z, the best
20-M total in any 3-hr. shift, SSB or CW. He also got 8 15-M Qs to
start & 10 40-M Qs at end for a total of 102, his best 3-hr shift.
N3UM 0002-0058Z got 33 20-M Qs, then 91 15-M Qs 0105-0247Z, 53/hr,
for a total 124 Qs, his best 3-hr. shift. W5MPB 0300 to 0502Z QRT
got 43 Qs on 40 M; when the band map cleared, he hopped to 20 M
for 7 last Qs and to 80 M for 6 last Qs on SSB. In a 1.9-hr "coda"
1000-1154Z, N3UM got 19 Qs on 40 M, 3 on 80 M, and 27 on 20 M.

K8LG
This was the second year that K8LG and the team operated in the M/2 category for IARU HF.

Our team consisted of eight operators, including every licensed member of the Papay family: Grace
K8LG, Doug K8DP, Carrie K8CLP, John K8YSE, and Diane W8ZJB. This was the first contest where all
five Papays made at least one QSO during a contest.

Also on the team were Ian KI8AN, Kirsten KE8ZYD, and their dad, Tim K8LK. Kirsten and Tim did
fantastic work on CW and kept things going on 15m and 10m.

Huge thanks to my mom, Carrie K8CLP, for keeping the crew well-fed.

POOR BAND CONDITIONS

KC7MDT
Operated for about 9 hours in total. Ran 800w into an OCF dipole at 60 ft.
Approximately 25% of the time I tried to run but wasn't loud enough (or hea
ring well enough) to keep a good rate, so I resorted to quite a lot of sear
ch and pounce.
This was my first time putting in more time than 1-2 hours in a contest, so
while I'm disappointed in my rate, I am pleased to have put in this level
of effort.

KC9EE
First actual contest using the RigSelect Pro SO2R controller. Actually, first actual contest doing
SO2R. Not having an antenna for 15 meters hurt. Failed at getting an antenna for 15 meters in the
air due to a shoulder injury. Jui Jitsu at age 64 can be dangerous, lol. Thanks to Jim, WT9U, and
Anthony, AB9YC, for being on the Scoreboard. It was real incentive to stay in the chair, which I
needed to do as they built leads early while I played with N1MM+ and the SO2R controller set up.
Great contest despite the not-so-great conditions. 73, Gary KC9EE

KD1MC   [photo/doc]
Our multi-op team used the amazing W1IMD station for IARU. I stayed on site in my camper van and
operated locally, while K1ESE and W1ETI operated remotely. Conditions were difficult, leading to a
lot of W QSOs, but it was still a lot of fun. —N1CFO

I was certain my antennas were lying on the ground during the day Saturday. I was not being heard
well, and bad enough to make me question my entire dang system. In contrast to 650 KHz of 10M
activity in the March ARRL SSB, I didn't make any QSOs on 10M this contest. I did work my first
ever 3V8 station in my ham career, I believe. Nonetheless thanks to everyone for putting on the

Sometimes when u least expect it a band will open up better
for an area. This time it was to Europe when its anytime
between midnite and 4 a.m. there and late afternoon here in
MT on 20. Signals got louder than all day earlier but only for
the HQ stns. Very few other EU were heard. 40 was a disaster
to DX but did ok state side.

KV4ZY
Casual operating just for fun.

KV8Q
Conditions were not good at all at the start of the contest. The
static kept getting worse during the afternoon and then we had a
couple of pretty good t-storms late afternoon until sunset. A
couple of brief power outages kept things interesting. After
that, things settlerd down for the last ten hours or so. Didn't
meet my goal but still had lots of fun. Thanks - 73 tom Rig

The HQ-Contest remains one of our favorites - many thanks to everyone for a
great competition and a fun weekend! Big appreciation to the Contest Committee
and all involved in making this event happen. Propagation was clearly weaker
than last year, with solar wind and D-layer disturbances degrading MUF and
causing fade-outs, especially on Sunday. We operated a full-scale M/2 with
2x2 interlocked radios and high-performance antenna systems, maximizing the
technical possibilities within the rules. At the same time, full respect to
those entering with
WRTC-style setups -- serious dedication in preparation for WRTC 2026. It would
be great to see the M/2 category evolve, recognizing both high-end multi-op
and limited/WRTC-style efforts. The EU HQ-race remains a highlight, engaging
hundreds of skilled Hams and leading stations in support of "national entries."
Thanks for the race and congratulations to P44W (W2GD/AA4B)for the win.
See you in the next one! - Team LX7I

I'm happy with the result, got a few CW and SSB.

Found that my call can be annoying for others to copy, I had a lot of stations get M7NM and either
get the last letter wrong or just not get it at all.

Good fun, even though I didn't play contest for long.

Bands were hard going until Saturday evening and then they opened. This contest could be best
described as "moments of pain followed by moments of joy."

N1RM
Between space weather muffling propagation and terrestrial weather threatening to zap the equipment,
we felt like we were fighting mother nature most of the time. Nevertheless, we managed to have a
great time and make over 1000 QSOs. Bryce, KM6VRX, handled all the phone QSOs and I did all the CW
and we hit a really good rhythm.

Other than the weather, the only glitch came late at night when I forgot about the band/mode change
time limit. While running on 80M, I saw an enticing mult get spotted on 20M so I jumped over there
to pick it up (I think 1 mult was worth 5.6 Qs at that point). Unfortunately, I still had about 8
minutes left on the timer for 80M. I wasn't sure what to do about it, since all the rule says is
that if you violate the timer it "may result in the entry being reclassified as a checklog". I think
that is a likely outcome since I wrote some code to detect band/mode switch violations, and I found
a total six violations in our log.

It's too bad, because we did pretty well, and I don't think that the band changes did much to
improve the score. It was more of a rule that we weren't used to and we didn't pay enough attention
to it. Hopefully we've learned the lesson for future multi-op efforts.

The station worked really well and it was great to hear the occasional "booming" comment despite
so-so band conditions.

Thanks for all the Q's, even though none of them may count for us.

73,
Rick

Conditions were bland. Worked about six hours and only used 40, 20 and 80 meters. Really a fun
contest and some good ops. Would like to work more time but kind of hard starting a contest at
7:00AM for me. Not an early bird person. Maybe next time. Thanks for the q's and 73, Rick,

N5KWD
I could have had more butt-in-seat but with the bands such as they were, I went to bed. When I got
back on they opened up quite a bit, without that 20m opening to Europe the whole thing would have
been a bust. Times like this you wish you were on the East Coast and not in Houston, Texas. I had to
work extra hard but my 5th entry using a new radio and amp were worth it. Good fun, fine business.

First half of contest bands were terrible to EU and any other DX.
My first 10 hours of the contest I was only able to operate about
6.4 hours in 5 broken up time slots, for 240 Qs, (sneaking away)
due to house guests. After struggling through poor conditions in my
first 6.4 hours, I wasn't sure I would continue on after dinner when
guests had departed. I popped back into the shack around 01:40utc
and found 20m to be alive to EU as well as 40m. I decided to give it
another go and stayed in the chair until 07:26utc when I safely broke
through 500 Qs and over 100k points. Even pressing through a 20 minute
thunderstorm that passed through with lots of lightning and heavy rains.
Lots of rain and lightning static for a while made copying signals
quite rough, but I think I pulled everyone out and into the log. Even
worked a few EU HQs on 80m through all the noise! Only wish I had more
quality time to spend in the chair. When I got back in the chair after
dinner, I CQd better than 75% of the time, and was rewarded with many
more Qs than I expected. The last 1.5 hours was a grind though to break
over the 500 Q threshold. I kept watching spots for new calls and mults
and kept N1MM logger busy changing bands on the fly! All in all, it was
fun to play. 73 es thanks for the Qs! Gene, N9TF

At first, I wasn't going to do this contest but after a few contacts made with "hunt, pounce and
log", I got hooked and was going to stop after 50 contacts but decided to keep going. Other chores,
like letting the dog in and out, feeding the horses, dinner, getting the mail, all made stops to
this, but I still ended up with over 300 contacts. With more planning and nailing the radio room
door shut, I should be able to do more next year. Great fun for the weekend and staying at home!

Very poor conditions to North America. 10m was a disappointment
not a single QSO. Even 15m was very poor. 20m was the money band.

A huge thank you to all the amazing ham radio operators who
participated in the IARU HF Championships 2025! Your energy,
dedication, and love for the hobby turned this event into a truly
global celebration. Whether you were running a pileup, chasing HQ
stations, logging from home, or braving the outdoors with a
portable setup -- every contact made a difference and brought
our community closer together. It's inspiring to witness
operators of all levels, from every corner of the world, coming
together with the same goal: connecting, learning, and having fun
on the air.
Your effort, sportsmanship, and signal helped make the bands come
alive. From the first CQ to the final 73, you showed the world
what ham radio is all about -- passion, perseverance, and
people. See you next year, 73 ..

During the contest there was a strong thunderstorm - something
broke through the transceiver with static and the transmitter
went into protection mode. The "HIGH SWR" indicator did not turn
off on all bands! The old FT1000D needs repair again!!
I thank my friends: UA4CNJ for providing me with a hut on the

Still working out which station gets to be called "HQ" in this event.

Our contest stations use Yasue FTDK101E tranceivers driving Expert 2KFA amplifies. Antennas are
beams on two 100 ft towers. We had a few technical issues before the contest but fortunately we
were able to work around that. Our entry may end up being a checklog as we generally operate multi
multi high power to give more of our members the opportunity to operate. Unfortunately this
conflicted with the Rules.
Our club supports the contesters by having a presents using VE6AO and look foward the the IARU

Thanks to all the other CW stations, your listening skill is a good example for me as a new CW OP. I

back to me for a QRS QSO as I'm about 8 months into learning CW. My dad was visiting, he was a

it. Condx were poor, still did well with QRP 72/73. WB9MII

WD8DSB
Ran 100% CW unassisted and started out very part time with the goal of 100 QSOs but then I kept
getting sucked in for higher numbers.

Operated very old school in that I did not want online spotting to aid my score in any fashion so I
ran entirely in search and pounce mode. As I grew closer to 400 QSO's I was so tempted to call CQ
but I avoided the urge and glad I stayed true to my word.

I heard nothing on 10 meters, and 20 meters was really poor until about 4pm local time (2000 UTC)
and then it really came alive around 6 pm local time (2200 UTC). 40 meters was in very good
condition despite QRN from thunderstorms.

Transceiver: Kenwood TS-180s (100 watts) with 500 Hz IF filter (45 years old) and Active Audio
Filter: Hi-Per-Mite active audio filter (200 Hz bandwidth).

TX Antenna 160 and 80 meters: 68 foot base loaded vertical wire hanging straight down from a very
tall Sycamore tree with 55 short buried radials (2500 feet of radials)

TX Antenna 40 through 10 meters: EFHW mounted horizontally 20 feet above the ground.

RX Antennas: 3 small point fed pennants (pointing 40, 160, and 300 degrees).

Thanks for all the QSOs and really enjoyed working familiar calls / friends.

WP3Z   [photo/doc]
This is our second year running the IARU contest from KP3J’s station using La
Sierra Contest Group call sign WP3Z. Our goal was to beat our numbers from 2024.
This year conditions were challenging and restricted our QSOs on 10 meters to
just 20 compared to the 500 plus QSOs we had in 2024. 20 and 15 meters were our
money makers.

The IARU championship is one of our favorites contests because we can operate
both SSB and CW, having a mix of operators together in one place and it is only
24 hours. We had a great time-sharing great food, radio stories and handling
equipment issues while watching & learning from our more experienced
operators and improving our skills in the process.

Thanks to all the stations for contacting WP3Z during this year IARUs
championship and to all the stations using the live score. Congratulations to
all the station in the M2 category but specially to P44W for tentatively leading
the category in the live score.

Looking forward to next year's IARU championship with all the infrastructure
improvements we have planned for KP3Js station. Sin Miedo!

WQ6X
This was WQ6X's 2nd QRP IARU GiG from Ramona, but the 1st-time Mixed mode.
The noise condx. were so horrible, that only 14 Ssb QSOs managed to happen.
Not surprising for low-mid SFI, 20-meters was THE band much of the time.

The contest began and ended on 40-meters. As the E.Coasters fired up their coffee Sunday morning,
they put a couple dozen random 3-pointers in the log.

Again this year, JA / VK / ZL were LARGELY missing, as was most of Africa.
What was AMAZing was the QRP signal making it to central EU on 40-meters
in the mid-evening. The less-noisy band openings seemed to be more on the "OTHER" side of the
planet, NoT so much on the Left Coast.

It would seem that WQ6X was the USA/NA leader in the QRP-Mixed category.
I guess that's worth something.

Great contest but I must hold The Spider Web Net on 14.347 accountable. I had been running on
14.346.5 for 90 mins when they asked if the freq. was in use. I replied and they heard me but
continued with their net. when I called them out on it they gaslighted and told me that they had
been meeting there for 40 years and I was the one who was in the wrong. At that point I wasn't
backing down and continued my run for another 90 mins. with them QRMing the whole time. It really
had no effect on me as that time period was on of the highest rates in the contest for me. It was
just very disappointing at how bad some people operate.

partial contest operation, simple wire dipole, triband rigid dipole
ELAD SDR QRP device,40 and 20m band only. Thanks for QSOs I apologize
to everyone to whom I had to repeat the call sign several times. I called
stations dozens of times at intervals, especially SSB stations, and a
endless cCQ and there was never answer.See you next contest.

Had a blast on my 'Roll your own mini Dxpedition' to Saint Helena. Went down to ZD7 after years of
working Gilbert, ZD7BG from afar. Got to work him QRP from within visual range of his antennas.
Finally got to 'be the DX' and I think I picked the perfect contest to do it for.

Special thanks to ZD7CTO who was my host for the operation. He has a great station to work from,
and was a gracious host for the time on the island.

Conditions were good from the Southern Hemisphere. But where which band was open to was not always
what I expected. Eastern Asia/Western Pacific never seemed to open as expected, but Europe and US
were readily available.

Was lucky enough to work Chris, KL9A at KM7W on 40m and 80m. Had to work hard for the 80m Q, and I
am appreciative for him hanging in with me to get the contact logged.

Was also pleasantly surprised to put Zone 61 in the log with KH6TU and KH6CJJ. In reviewing my
log, Zone 2 with VA5S, Zone 21 with RC9J, and Zone 39 with 4X1DX were the single contact Zones I
noted. Thanks for the mults.

Thanks to all the stations who took the time to work me. I had the trip of a lifetime to ZD7. The
people of Saint Helena are truly Saints!
