3D2HQ
This is the main Headquarters (HQ) station of the Fiji Association of Radio Amateurs (FARA) based in
Suva, Fiji Islands. This particular activity was done using 80W barefoot from an IC-7300 transceiver
into an OCFD (Windom) wire antenna, and without the use of any computers for sending, receiving or
logging QSOs. The Morse paddle used was a Japanese CQ Ham Radio Vega and built-in iambic keyer from
the radio. The operator was Antoine (Tony) 3D2AG.

My first single-op effort in this contest. Enjoyed every minute of it!

4M5A
IARU HF Contest 2024

In this edition, I operated under the new contest callsign 4M5A, which I first used in the KOS
Contest. I still fumbled with the callsign at first, but at some point during a pileup, I got the
hang of it and ended up loving the call, especially for its brevity. As always, the TS-590S was
powered 100% by solar energy: 100W panel and 36amp/h LifePO4 battery. I used a 5BDQ dipole antenna,
and a few hours before the contest started, I managed to install a rotor for the TA-33 Junior
antenna with the help of my family. This was the antenna I was going to use to try to get more
multipliers, which I always need, but I'm still not convinced of its performance. I'll have to keep
testing it in the coming days to see if I keep it installed, improve it, or install another one that
gives me better results.

The activity and excitement of the contest were like a roller coaster. It was slow at first, then
almost nonexistent, then it started to pick up so much that I was able to climb the live scores to
the point of being in second place until it was time to go to bed and see if I could make a few more
QSOs before calling it a night.

I felt like the participation was lower than in other editions, but we'll see about that in the
end.

IARU HF Contest 2024

final.

issues. All in all, good fun!!

Disastrous start with just 70 QSOs in two hours. I thought about
giving up and went to sleep for a few hours. When I started again
the propagation had improved and in the 15 meter band I exceeded
100 QSOs/hour so I decided to continue until the end of the contest.
Unfortunately, the antennas for the low 80 and 160 bands are poorly
performing and I was only able to connect well-equipped reception
stations. Final score slightly better than the previous edition.

K3CCR
K3CCR is the club station at the Collington continuing-care
retirement community at FM 18OW in MD, just east of DC. In the
2024 IARU test N3UM and W5MPB operated Multi-1 HP Assisted. N3UM
did all CW, W5MPB all SSB. We hoped to beat our 2023 IARU claim.
We did that; 1.05 X the Q pts and 1.1 X the mults for 1.56 X our
2023 score. SFI > 230 made 15 & 20 M Q-totals big, 40 M ~OK, 80 &
10 M poor. We alternated 3-hour shifts as worked well before. We
never ran; we clicked new spots in bandmaps or Avail Mults & Qs.
At start N3UM got 48 15-M Qs 12-1309Z, then 11 20-M Qs 1319-1349Z,
& 38 more 15M-Qs by 1459Z. W5MPB 1503-1659Z got 79 15-M Qs. Then
1702-1754 he hopped as bandmaps cleared and refilled for 20 more
15-M Qs & 16 10-M Qs by 1754Z. N3UM 1802-1909Z got 38 15-M Qs,
then 1918-2038 54 20-M Qs, then just 4 10-M Qs 2043-49. W5MPB
2058-00Z hopped bands for 104 Qs on 20 M, 35 Qs on 15 M, 4 Qs on
40 M, and 2 Qs on 10 M. N3UM 0008-0132Z got 59 20-M Qs, then 69
40-M Qs 0142-0257Z. From 0300 to 0546Z QRT to sleep, W5MPB hopped
20, 40, 80, & 15-M bands for 58, 30, 7, & 8 Qs respectively. Back
for a 1.6-hr "coda" 1016-1152Z, N3UM got 22 20-M Qs, 17 15-M Qs, &
6 10-M Qs. On 20 M he got 3 VKs in 3 Zns plus KH6 in Zn 61 and RU0
in Zn 34. Within ~1%, we got equal numbers of Qs; 366 and 362.

K8LG
This was the first time I entered the M/2 categories with my own equipment. Our team of four
operators included Ian KI8AN and his father K8LK, who joined my father K8DP and me at the start of
the contest. KI8AN and K8LK left around dinner time, and my father and I continued through the
night.

We had to pause briefly around 1:00 AM due to local lightning in the area. Once the weather cleared,
I was able to work many European stations on 20 meters.

Overall this was a great contest and a valuable learning experience for Ian KI8AN who had not
seriously contested before.

First IARU contest for me, propagation greatly down from the ARRL contests in March, especially poor
on 10M by comparison. Many persistent Euro HQ stations with good signals. Big challenge with the 24
hour format is just one shot at the daytime propagation bands, no second day to look for
improvement. Heard surprisingly few other North American stations. Enjoyed it nonetheless and out
of nowhere worked a couple of new countries. Didn’t have any strategy for maximizing points so
just had fun working as many as possible. Don’t have a good CW software interface figured out so
just went on Phone only low power, which turned out near the top in W/VE. Thanks to many DX
stations for pulling out my weak signal!

Frist time with IARU contest - fun times!

KH7Q
Thanks to my gracious hosts KH6YY and KH6CAT, and to KH7U and KH6U for
fixing rotators and antennas! 40m was unusable at start of contest
(0200 local time) due to BY radar covering the entire band.
Reconfigured this M/M station into SO2R mode using a RigSelect Pro and
my Serial Box and Y-BOXs for lockout circuit. Two Elecraft K4 radios,
KPA1500 amp, and new ACOM 2000A amp worked well. Thankful that the
sun stayed quiet for the most part for the entire contest.

KK4R
We came home a day early from a trip to help with grandchildren
and suddenly, there was an opportunity to operate. There were
distractions, like necessary chores and regrettable news, but the
contest was great, and it was lots of fun. Conditions were
pretty good, and the thunderstorms stayed away from my house. I
even made a contact or two on 160m. All told, it was a great
success!

KO4KGA
This was my very first actual contest (does Field Day count?), which I had learned about only 51
minutes prior to contest start from my good QSO friend Yutaka JH1GEX as we QSOed that morning. I'm
thankful he mentioned it! I was amazed at just how many people were on the radio at any one time,
and I was further amazed at just how far our signals can go. In a little more than one hour--from
0640Z to 0737Z on the 14th--I QSOed with people in TEN different countries, and with only 100W
(acknowledging that they were almost certainly using directional antennas).

Over the past few weeks, I had unknowingly been practicing radiocraft for this contest. Improving my
setup, audio settings, learning how to solder, getting a taller mast, and just getting on the air to
make QSOs; the antenna (a twinlead j-pole) I built myself following Michael KB9VBR's video and other
direct guidance--thank you Michael! The incremental efforts and practice lead to a much more
reliable rig configuration and over 800 QSOs in about 90 days.

This was an overall wonderful experience.

La Sierra Contest Group, KP4JA was active from Aibonito, Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 for the IARU world
championship this past weekend in the M2 LP Mixed mode category. We experienced poor conditions
during the first few hours but things started to heat up later on during the contest.

We had an absolute blast developing our strategy and executing our plan based on our strengths and
limitations. Several lessons learned that will be applied to the next contest. Thanks to all the
stations we had contact with. See you next time on the air!

Operators: NP3A, WP3A, KP4ZZ, KP3N, WP4TZ, EB7DX, KP3J, and our club mascot Chewy.

This was my first return to the IARU HF World Championship SO-CW-LP category since the COVID
pandemic. I had high hopes during this peak of Solar Cycle 25 with the Solar Flux Index in the mid
200's. During the contest, the HamClock display kept me oriented on the overall performance of the
bands and their relation to the daylight and nighttime sides of the world and helped me to select an
optimum operating band as openings occurred to any part of the world. The ionosphere cooperated
with no HF blackouts. Using my Elecraft KX3, KXPA100 amplifier, a Buddistick whip antenna on the
balcony rail, and only the "Hunt and Pounce" contest method, I beat my previous best personal record
for this contest with a total of 427 CW contacts, 1,417 QSO points, 126 multipliers & a total
claimed score of 178,542 points. I am very happy with this new achievement and thoroughly enjoyed
my 21 hours of contest operation.

Me the whole contest as I couldn't turn my beam so I was fixed on

Kudos to Dave, K1VUT, for his fine score in the Low Power
Unassisted USA Category. And, thanks to the early risers on
Sunday morning to provide the needed QSO's to keep things
interesting. It is greatly appreciated. It was quite noisey
during the day Saturday but so goes life. The on-line scoreboard
makes things exciting. Sure wish more people would take
advantage of it. The new mixture of pig lard and lye made a good
mix for the antenna wax but gloves are reuireed. Looking forward
to next year already. Thanks - 73 tom Rig = TenTec Eagle @

Fun contest. Reasonably good conditions on 80-15m. Little activity on 10
and 160m.

I used Flex setup 6600/PGXL/AG. No problems this time aside from voice memories in N1MM not working,
requiring a reload of N1MM+. To gain punch in SSB, I used an extra speech processor TenTec 715.
Compared to a regular Flex signal, the processor gave 3S better reports and generated many positive
comments about the signal quality.

For The Caribbeans I use a 2 el beam made of 4 kg carbon fiber mast and
4 spreaders made of carbon fiber fishing poles. 5 kg total. The beam was set up last October and was
supposed to collapse in a month, but it i still standing for 10 months.

At least following stations gave me wrong zone: DK1WB, DL2DX, 9A/OP6G, KD8OSD, RA6DV. I logged what
they sent, even when I know it was most likely incorrect. Additionally IZ7DJS gave ARI instead of
zone, which is most likely incorrect too, but I logged what I received.
It would be good to clearly clarify in contest rules what we are suppose to log in these situations.
It should not be too difficult to make policy for it and include it in the rules so it is clear for
all participants.

I have the impression that many radio amateurs only work the
headquarters. This means that as a single operator you simply
have to call CQ and few people will come to you. 1 hour CQ is
approximately 15 to 20 qso's. This appears to be an HQ
Championship. Of course I don't work with a beam either and have
to do it with a wire and a vertical antenna.

My second IARU contest. Same setup as last year but my rotator
stop working.
Update: Repaired the rotator controller the night before contest. Also included panadapter via
RF-out which helped a lot.
I don't know for the others but at my location the conditions where terrible with most stations
coming very weak and buried in the noise.

was WPX SSB. This time we combine two youngsters (S56AS, S53TM)
for SSB and two OM's (S50R, S51J) for CW. We were using FTDX10,

What a fun and exhausting solo go. As the Zulu day is 0500 - 0500
local I got out in my relatively early morning for a session
with mono-band whips on the car. Evening I took the car to the
beach, intending a multi-band doublet. All went well except for
missing the wire legs for it! sigh Back to the whips, however
now a much more comfortable temperature. The World was on the air
mostly on 15m and 20m. Countries I'd not heard before, some even
heard me, and we worked! I've a full page of those that didn't
hear me too. grin
Really good fun to leave the apartment and get on for this one.

Operated mobile on a Yaesu Ft891 at 100 watts with an Alpha matching coil and an Alpha Moto 5' whip.
I had the control head mounted to a cup holder mount on the center console and the body to the back
of my car in the cargo space area on a bracket supported with heavy duty 15lb velcro to keep it in
place as I intended not to drill. Instead of connecting the radio to the car battery I connected it
to a 12 volt 50 amp/hr NoJoke LifePo 4 battery in the back of my vehicle supported with heavy duty
15 lb velcro strips on the bottom to keep it from getting whipped around while driving. I found the
battery on eBay. The battery allowed me to get the full power out of the radio without any problems
wheras if I wired it to the car battery it would've eventually conked out due to battery drain.

I Made a contact to Indonesia while parked at Niles Beach in Gloucester, Massachusetts during the
contest.

This is another IARU contest from ARRL EB Section.
This was a LAZY IARU contest, enabling me to evaluate the revamped
antenna system @W7AYT and explore some nuances of Stereo-CW, prompting
me to run this contest as CW-Only.
It is quite clear that the Concord location is TRULY a "receive vortex".
Except for 80/75 meters, stations hear me MUCH louder than I hear them;
remember: "If I can't Hear 'em, I can't Work 'em". The only areas missing
from the log were in Africa - missing WAC for this contest. I didn't
even see any SPOTs for AF stations.

Bottom-line, the operating goals were met - the FT-2000 performed FLAWLESSLY.

Was very surprised to see how good the band conditions were on 10, 15 & 20m on Saturday.
Unfortunately I could not take full advantage of this opening and give as many as possible a qso.
Sunday morning was different, the conditions were poor and difficult to copy Call Signs and Reports
at times. My antenna for 40m gave me a few problems so could not operate on that band. I have no
antenna for 80m. However, this was an very enjoyable contest and hopefully I will be able to
participate again next year. Best 73 from St. Helena Island
