Not sure that WSJT-X is suitable for contesting yet.

(1) The required exchange was only the call sign and grid but the Standard Exchange sequence of
WSJT-X includes signal reports.

(2) The exchange example given by ARRL was:

"CQing Station: CQ TEST N1SFE FN31
Answering Station: N1SFE W9SZ EN50
CQer: W9SZ N1SFE R FN31
Answer: N1SFE W9SZ RR73
CQer: W9SZ N1SFE 73"

"CQ TEST..." and "...R FN31" are not part of the standard WSJT-X Exchanges. WSJT-X only allows you
to change 1 of the 6 Standard Messages.
If you go that route, it screws up default transmission sequence and you have to manually force it;

(3) Very few people calling CQ during this contest were calling "CQ TEST..." and therefore,
impossible to know if you were even working people participating in the contest;

(4) A lot of callers never sent their Grid Square, they started the contact with the signal report.
It was almost impossible to prompt them to send their Grid after the contact was initiated;

(5) The slow rate of Qs and 15 second sequence of messages was almost unbearable in comparison to
CW, RTTY, or SSB contest exchange rates;

(6) The scoring method of this contest generated a score incomparable with the score you would see
from existing contests with their multipliers.

My local radio club really wants to use WSJT-X in field day. After this contest, I'm not sure
WSJT-X is even suitable to send "2A KS" or confirm the other station's FD Exchange!

K0MQZ
As a first time contester, it wasn't 100% clear if the "CQ TEST" call was merely an example ("test"
being generic filler for something more specific to the event), a suggestion or a requirement.

After a lot of fiddling, reading and observing, it became obvious that it was a suggestion
(considering contacts with non-contesters were permitted), but there were a lot of other
participants using "CQ WW". Almost assuredly a result of WSJT-X having a Special Settings radio
button labelled World Wide Digital but an obvious indicator that others weren't entirely clear on
this themselves.

While it certainly didn't hurt, I lost quite a bit of time having started off using that Special
Settings option, calling CQ WW and attempting to selectively find other CQ WW callers amidst what I
had assumed were folks that were simply running test calls at the start of the competition. After a
while I saw that many were completing exchanges and wondered if the CQ TEST example in the rules was
more than a simple example exchange which cut even more time from participating early on.

But, as I mentioned, this was my first time participating in any contest and other than the rocky
start... it was incredibly fun. I have limited time to participate but being digital, I was able to
participate silently into the dark hours of the night without fear of waking anyone up. I hope to
see more digital competitions in the future and will definitely try my hand with other modes in the
future.

Thank you for putting this together!

K2TE
I suggest that stations be required to send a "RR73" or a "73" at the end of a contact. There were
many times where I did not receive an end to the contact and logged the station. Later in the
contest, the same station I thought I had worked when answering the station would call me when I
was calling CQ. FT4/FT8 operation often shows a 10-15 dB swing in signal strength during a contact
so that it is necessary to acknowledge a contact completion.

Glad WJST-X / N1MM integeration works. N1MM is actually not that
bad to setup after some failed attempts. I also assisted
another PVRC chapter member get setup. Seems like quite a few
station didn't use auto Seq and would give out signal reports.
FT4 was the way to go. FT8 too slow. I think I might have spent
maybe just an hour of my time on FT8 and even that was probably a
bad use of the time. Racked up low point QSOs at the end on 40M
wanted to break 300 QSOs. This contest was lots of fun. WSJT-X
should have it listed in the software. I used the WW contest and
I could see many others also did this. Lots of stations must be
using WSJT-x built-in contest mode which does not clearly show
dups. Lots of stations trying to work me as dups. I developed a
stratigy I can use for next time.

fIRST OF ALL, THERE WERE NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS TO CONTACT SOMEONE THAT JUST REPEATED THE ENDLESS LOOPOF
+5, +7, +9, +8, +6,+4 ,THAT i SOULD COMMUNICATE WITH A STATION. ONE ACTUALLY WAS A 10 MINUTE
STRING, THAT NEVER CONNECTED i JUST KILLED THE TRANSMISSION.

SECOND, THE FINAL LOGGING INTO SUBMISSION TOOK TIME WAITING THE NEXT FOR THE HELP DESK. I GOT A
"CONTEST:()NOT RECOGNIZED. EXPECTED ARRL-DIGI" ERROR. NO WHERE IN INSTRUCTIONS DID IT SAY "IF YOU
GET THIS ERROR, GO INTO CABRILLO FILE AND CHANGE TO "ARRL-DIGI". MY MISTAKE WAS ARRL WAS IN CAPS
AND DIGI WAS IN SMALL LETTERS.

THIRD, REFERRING TO #2 NO WHERE DID IT SAY THIS WAS CASE SENSITIVE. i DONT EVEN KNOW WHERE THIS
CAME FROM, LET ALONE WHERE TO CORRECT.

FOUR, THANK YOU TO PAUL BOURQUE N1SFE CONTEST PROGRAM MANAGER WHO VERY PROMPTLY RESPONDED TO MY
EMAIL SENT 6/5 FOR HELP ON THIS ISSUE

FIFTH, CAN YOU SEND A BETTER DOCUMENT THAN THE 2 OR 3 PAGER AND HOW TO SEARCH ON LINE ERROR'S SUCH
AS THIS

SIXTH, WHEY DID A LOT OF STATIONS NOT EVEN ANSWER ME AND AFTER REPEATED CALLS AND SOME WENT THROUGH
IN LESS THAN 10 SECONDS TO GET MY RR. THE BAND CONDITIONS WERE VERY GOOD. I GOT A NEW ZEALAND
STATION BUT COULDN'T GET MY LOG CAPTURE FOR MANY.

WHY DIDN'T I SEE MANY CQ WW. IF THE CQ WW PROTOCOL WASN'T USED THE RESULTS SHOULD BE NULL AND VOID
FOR FAILURE TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS.

KT0D
My first confrontation with Cabrillo format. How to get from wsjt-x.log to Cabrillo? I created the
header manually, and the QSO records on my trusty Linux command line: cat ARRL-Digi.log |awk -F,
'{printf "QSO: %s DG %s %s KT0D DM78 %-6s %s \n", substr($7,1,3), $3, substr($4,1,5), $5, $6} END
{print "END-OF-LOG:"}'|sed 's/://2;s/\.0/\./;s/\./000/;s/7000/ 7000/' > kt0d-qso I then submitted
cat kt0d-header kt0d-qso > kt0d.log

N6JSO
Since my "radio Jeep" was in the shop, I did a "DeckXpedition" using my backpack-portable rig on my
upstairs deck until it started to rain Saturday evening. I decided to give QRP a try, so I turned my
Xiegu G90 down to 5W, and with that and my AlexLoop mag loop antenna, I was able to contact Hawaii
and Japan. I had good luck on 15m during the day and did some 40m in the late afternoon. I could
hear stations from Australia and South America, but they apparently couldn't hear my 5W signal. I
had too much noise on 20m from my house to be able to pick anyone out of the noise log enough to
sustain a QSO. I was only able to operate for a few hours due to rain and other commitments, but I
had a good time with my first digital contest.

N6PCD
Great new contest! I enjoyed it, but couldn't make a lot of QSOs, mainly due to having a compromise
vertical antenna. I live in a two-story townhouse, surrounded by other similar structures. I could
hear 'em, but they for the most part couldn't hear me.

N6WHV
To me, the objective of the ARRL is to encourage people to become hams and to encourage existing
hams to be active in the amateur radio community. Ten pages of rules for a single contest is absurd!
Who thought that 5.5 hours is enough sleep for an 80-year old person. Loose the rest period rules.
Simplify the contest rules.

WSJT-X did not provide support for the ARRL-Digi contest and subsequently, many operators were using
the incorrect software configurations. I got RR73 from one station for 5-minutes. Hopefully the
software adds ARRL-DIGI support and ARRL simplifiers the rules and publishes how to setup WSJT-X.

ON7ET
Hello,

Overall, the contest was a lot of fun.
However, far too many operators do not finalize their QSO correctly.
Having to send RR73 several times, without ever receiving the final 73 too often leaves a doubt on
the validity of the QSO.
On some bands, the frequency recommended for FT4 started on the frequency used by non-competitors,
which induces unnecessary loss of time.
For the next edition, it would be wise to review the recommended sub-bands, and choose band segments
that are not usually used.
Thank you for this new experience, and probably see you next year.

What is the problem with your robot not accepting 6 M frequencies and rejecting the logs. Completely
unheard of.
By the way had a lot of problems in using WSJT-X and people not understanding that in this contest
no report was
required. There should be a better way in getting this around.
Luckily both 20 and 15 m band stayed open for reasonably long time.

Because I'm not a native speaker of English, I'm afraid I may have misunderstood the All Enclosed
Antennas Overlay rule for the ARRL International Digital Contest. I live in a two-story house and my
antennas are on the rooftop. When I read the contest rules, I understood that the All Enclosed
Antennas Overlay rule would apply to this case and checked this option when I sent my log. Now I'm
not sure if I should have checked that option or not. So, I have uploaded my log again without
choosing that overlay option. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I had a lot of fun operating my first digital contest, once I got

VG3RSA
Fun contest. I calculated my own distance bonus scores. I
imported my cabrillo log into a spreadsheet and followed the
instructions in N5JTY's article in QST Jan. 1989 to convert
maidenhead grids into longitude and latitude. Then I used a
formula for great circle distance found on wikipedia. Hope
that I did it all correctly! I used my ICOM IC-7300 at 50W.
I was running WSJT-X. I alternated between two antennas. For
20m and higher I used a 21.5 ft vertical whip with base up
4 ft above ground and just two 15 ft radials. It was fed with
a 4:1 unun. My 2nd antenna was a horizontal 65 ft long classic
single-wire feed Windom up 25 ft agl and fed by a 9:1 unun at
2 ft agl. I used 3 on-ground 59 ft radials plus the coax outer
braid. I used my in-shack LDG auto-tuner for tuning. It was
used mainly for 40m and lower but I got
interesting results at 20m and up by calling CQ and waiting for
replies. Best overall DX antenna was the vertical when using
search & pounce.

The ARRL is to be commended for the very intelligent and thoughtful design for the WW digital

enjoyed it.

W2LPL
What great fun. I love the fact there is an 8 hour catagory. 15M was clearly the band of choice.
Noticed that there seemed to be more activity of non-contest participants on the standard FT8
frequencies (.074 ) then on the Contest Frequencies, and not participating in the contest.
Hopefully as word spreads of the contest, more of them will particiapate in the future. Special
thanks to K1JT and all the members of the developement team for creating WSJT-X and these wonderful
digital modes. 73 Les, W2LPL

W4IL
Loved this contest! A WSJT contest mode needs to be settled on and published. Some were using NA
VHF, others WW DIGI, and some were using none at all. Overall, very fun time and thank you so much
for creating a major digital contest for us digital folks!

W4PFM
Using a 40 ft raingutter on the west
side of my house. It's invisible, storm proof, no antenna
switches just a 1 to 9 unun.and works all bands 160 thru 6
meters. only tuning is the auto antenna tunner in the K3. Would
this qualify as an indoor antenna even though it is outside and a
part of the house as delivered from the factory

W4POT
More stations using non-contest exchange on band than those in
contest. Shame that I could have made more contacts outside of
contest. Other portions of the band never showed digital
activity.

W4RJG
1st time in contest since 1984 so 1st for digital, too. Running 100w on 40m & 7m. 20' high
Horizontal Quad Loop. Had fun!

W4VG
Well, this was certainly different. In the beginning, everyone was trying to do the 6 transmission
exchange like the ARRL instructions suggest. By the end, everyone had figured out how to complete a
QSO with only 1 or 2 transmissions. Almost no-one was sending the "73" that tells WSJT-X to log it.
The exchange needs to be rethought and standardized. I would go back to including the usual
meaningless "dB" signal reports, but keep it to 2 or 3 transmissions. I was sitting there bored
waiting for the "73" that was never going to come, sending the "RR73" over and over. Once or twice I
dozed off and when I woke up a few minutes later noticed the computer had completed the QSO for me
and logged it. Stayed on 15 meters a lot to get long distances.  It was wide open to South America;
kept working Brazil, Venezuala, Argentina stations all day. I would suggest just limit it to FT4
next year. Joe Taylor is right, why would you use anything else for a contest. Maybe he could come
up with FT2, 4 second intervals. I didn't hear what I would call "weak" signals. 73 folks!

Had fun doing this contest and will do it again next year. Had fun breaking in my new Flex 6600.

The ARRL Int DIGI contest was great. Mainly used FT4. WSJT-X v2.5.4 held up very well on my MacBook
Pro with an M1 Max CPU and 32GB memory. Rig is an IC-7300 running 100 watts. Antenna is an
EFHW-4010, up about 30 ft.
It seems that many people are not familiar with how to operate with WSJT-X using FT4 in a contest.
It seemed like many people did not have Auto-Seq checked, which led to many busted calls. All in
all, a very good contest. FT4 is a good mode for digital contesting.

Couldn't operate full contest because I could not download the needed contest ap fro N3FJP.

This contest was a lot of fun. I spent time moving between the designated contest watering holes
and going out to work "civilians" on the normal FT8/FT4 frequencies. I had a great run starting at
0630 Local with 40, 20, then 15 all opening to Asia giving me a string of 20-30 point contacts. I
had hoped to operate the full 24 but I know I can likely beat this score next time. Operating condx
were IC-7610 and an EFLW using an autotuner.

Ran the contest with an indoor 80m dipole wrapped around the attic in a single
story condo, up about 12ft AGL. Fed with 450 ohm ladder line and a good tuner,
this dipole performs decently on all HF bands 80-6. It also works on 160, but
not well. 15m was my hottest band, followed by 20. I've seen better
propagation recently, but it seemed good enough for my condo station in South
Florida.

I decided to use N3FJPs software for this contest instead of N1MM. Glad I did!
N3FJPs program for this contest was much easier to use. I was impressed.

I only got 20 hours in because the AC in the condo stopped working. Wound up
fixing it myself rather than waiting for the serviceman to get here. The split
capacitor for the compressor and fan motor failed on the compressor side, and I
happened to have a spare! Saved money on the service call, but lost some hours
in the contest.

This contest was frustrating yet still fun !
I thin k I'll be back for another one next year!

Special Thanks to Dave, K1TTT for access to his station.

Finally a DX contest optimized for DX contacts. This was an interesting contest. I am pretty sure
people did not realize how challenging it would be. I am looking forward to seeing more activity on
6/10 next year.

During the contest I found myself running an optimization model. I kept on estimating how many
domestic stations I would need to average for the next 15 minutes vs. taking the time and having
QSOs with stations worth 20-30+ points each. I enjoyed the challenge.

ARRL - thank you for defining the FT4/FT8 contest subbands.

Looking forward to joining again in 2023!

Kind of a fun contest. Saturday seemed to have much better DX conditions. Too many non-contest
stations on the FT4 frequencies, the FT8 frequencies were OK. Thanks for the Qs... Bill

Great contest looking forward to next year!

While I could not participate for the entire event, my interest was piqued! I think this has some
real potential, especially using FT4.

Suggestion: I would like to see more outreach regarding both recommended frequencies and contest
setup for next year. Regardless, this one has some real potential. Next year, definitely SO2R!

Had fun in this first-ever ARRL Intl Digital contest, rg.

Always like the FT8 contests. This was a great idea for us that like the new digital modes
(FT4/FT8). Got a late start Saturday due to laptop OS issue. Moved to main station where I operated
the contest instead of remote from outside on my deck.

Exceeded my expectations and had fun. Thanks for all the Q's.

I started the contest on my laptop but could not get time sync to work so switched to desktop.
Forgot to add a handful of contacts from the laptop. Now updated.

There were wide variations of exchanges with different operators in this contest. It was difficult
at times to determine if a contact had been successful or a failure because of some operators
attempt to be as brief as possible and move on. Responding to my call with a R EM29 (for an
example) and giving no hint that they received my RR73, or the reverse, not responding to my R EM29
with any indication of receiving the exchange left me with doubts about my ability to record with
accuracy a lot of the contacts. I know its not possible to enforce but if would be nice to adhere
to some standard to insure both operators have confidence in their logs. WO7U

I submitted 2 logs, but the last submission is the correct one.
