I'd suggest that recommending 14080kHz as the 'base' frequency for the sub-band for 20m FT4 activity
during the contest is inappropriate because it results in clashes with all the non-contest activity
that is always based on that frequency. Many of the operators who were using 14080kHz for their
non-contest QSOs didn't know how to respond to contest callers with the consequence that many QSOs
logged during the contest didn't include the correct locator information or included unnecessary
information such as a signal report. Furthermore, there was little or no evidence of contest
operators being willing to QSY up the band from 14080kHz, to avoid all the non-contest FT4 activity.

Perhaps consideration could be given to recommending a frequency slightly further up the 20m band,
for example 14085kHz, as the 'base' frequency for 20m FT4 activity in future contests. This would
give a sub-band that would be 5kHz wide, up to the start of the FT8 sub-band at 14090kHz, which on
the evidence of the 2023 contest would be more than adequate.

Rules lack clarity about off time for restricted time operation. My interpretation is that the 8
hour period can only be within a 14 hour period within the competitioon. Also 20m frequency clashed
with DXpedition T31TT.

Thanks to all participates. This is my first contest in DIGI mode.
The conditions not so good, propagations is very evanescent ant much QRN.
I've operated by my IC7300 only 80w and Vertical antenna about 25meter on the ground and MSHV
software.
I'm live in a short island in the Augusta harbor.

Great Fun to use Digital in contest after learning WSJT-X earlier this year. Using 10m dipole,
Force 12 vertical, and 6m 2el beam in attic so all enclosed due to Condo restrictions. Found out
that FT4 is more exciting and higher scoring than FT8 as exchanges are twice as fast. So used that
when many stations were active and progagation was good. Disappointed that 6m never opened up from
my location but looking forward to VHF contest next weekend!

Hi
I was using this contest to practice for field day. I had some problems with logging. When using
N1MM+ linked to Wsjt it is very difficult to find dupes quickly enough when using ft4. There is no
color change in the WSJT window to show any chnage in worked status, it stays green all the time.
FT4 on 20 meters at 14.080 is very bad as that is the normal frequency for FT4 and when working by
accident someone not in the contest the exchange does not work correctly or at all. Some people used
WW or TEST in their CQ and I tried both and they both worked the same WSJT has a selection for WW
Digital and you need to use VHF selection to generate TEST. Also some people just used CQ ARRL and
it worked OK but can cause a little confusion, especially in FT4 because you have less than one
second to make a decision. You should probably give some kind of extra bonus for 80 meters as it is
mostly short range and so not much activity because distance counts so heavily. 10 meters was very
disapointing.

K5ZD
A frustrating video game using a mode that was
never designed for contesting in the crowded HF bands.
I could call people and get answers, but usually
no answers to CQs. Hard to know if a tx frequency
is clear.

I operated from 10 pm local time to 6 am, trying to maximize points by working mostly DX in Asia.
Conditions were excellent, and there was no local QRN. 15 was open to Europe and Asia until
midnight, and then 20 was still going strong to Asia at 6 am, so I never even got to 40 Meters. I
really enjoyed the contest, other than the disruption to my sleep schedule. I beat my last year's
winning score by 20%, so I'm pretty happy about that. QSO breakdown: Asia 266, Europe 28, Oceania 5,
North America 5, Africa 2, South America 1.

Fun event! Very casual operation here with IC7300 and a 32 foot wire, 70% indoors. Fed with 4:1 UnUn
and LDG autotuner. Wire runs across the floor on the 2nd floor of my 1907 Craftsman home, into the
next bedroom and up through a high window.

Used W6ELprop to calculate distance between grid squares.

Enjoyed the contest. Worked about 80% FT4 with its faster
exchange. I get the feeling that things ran smoother this year.
Maybe more stations are getting the hang of how to time call and
responces to get more QSOs in the log. I will operate the WW
Digi in the fall. I still think RTTY is the best mode for
digital contesting.

KC1NBI
Life in the nearfield! It was kinda quiet out there on FT4/8 but still some great DX for me!

KC7WDL
Worked more DX than I expected although it seems more tiring to run FT-8 for hours than a SSB
contest. Folks using WSJT-X need to check the "Hold Tx Freq" box to enable split operation. Also,
some contesters clocks were way off making it hard to contact them. Seems like only 15 m was working
for me north of Seattle. Found the time off rules pretty confusing as a single op. All in all, I had
a good time though. Thanks for the contest, ARRL.

KD0FDJ
I ran PSK 31, which before Joe Taylor's modes was the most popular soundcard mode. I didn't see a
single other ARRL contester, but fortunately did find some guys participating in a P0DXS 070
contest. Otherwise I'd have nothing instead of next to nothing. If the ARRL wants to preserve
non-FT modes, it should put a non-FT category in the Digital Contest.

First contest I've really been able to take part in and make more than a couple of QSOs. 1,300
points and 154 QSOs, quite happy with this. Ran an IC7100 to an EFHW N4IL wire antenna from 6 to 20
feet off the ground and an FT891 to a Cobra Ultralite 40m dipole in the attic.

KN6OKY
This event went well this year, op time was for about 16 hours, and
worked bands ranging from 40M, 20, 15, and 10. This time I reached 32
different US States, and 14 different countries, running the radios
on
QRP power. One of those was a small kit radio. Antenna sets this
time
were 4 monoband dipoles raised at various heights and orientations.
Great time and will do it again.

Fun contest with some great band openings between CA and the South Pacific!
I had a few exchanges where I couldn't get their grid square, so I put RR73
as a placeholoder and marked them as X-QSO but left them in the log just in
case they submit one.

NN7SS
I'm disappointed no certificates are available from 2022, and
the 2022 contest writeup was minimal, and the ARRL did little
to no promotion of this contest, and didn't do anything to
address the frequency conflicts, procedures and NIL problems.
But what the heck, lets win another category. (I won SO2R QRP
last year.)

Setup was difficult, as all the software version changes from
last year were incompatible and getting the updates and new
versions setup correctly took hours. Then I found a huge birdie
at 14.091 that I had to track down and eliminate. A final check
on PSKReporter indicated I was transmitting OK. What could go
wrong At the first minute my 20m Left TX has no audio sent!
Checked all the individual programs, but finally just had to
close everything and restart. That fixed it and at 10 minutes
late I'm on the air! Worked fine for 45 minutes, then lost
audio again. Restart everything, rinse, repeat... At least I
had something to watch, catch and keep me occupied.

Despite my best efforts, there is no way to increase rate in
FT8, just fill every cycle with a CQ or some progress. If no
answers, stop to see if my freq is clear. Carry on... At 8 hrs
I was tired of watching for failures and restarting everything,
so 8 hrs is my category this year.

I wanted to do some other digital mode work. I started in
PSK31, but it wasn't too good. Then I tried Olivia and found that
this was even more of a problem (1 qso's on 1/2 hour). So we went to PSK63, but not much to do there
either. Too bad, this is a Digi mode contest, but it was
just an FT8/FT4 contest. Maybe you should think about making different time slots or separate
categories!

I must be getting old as my eyes started getting blurry after 10 hours. I need a clone of myself.

I was confused over which cabrillo line items such as callsign must be in both the text box
interface and must also cabrillo records. If you are going to have a means to enter a data item via
the dialog box, then repeating it in cabrillo format paste in box is redundant.

This contest is did not receive the publicity it should have gotten.

I had less than 10 hours total operating time but I had to change to 24 hours since I must not have
indicated time on and time off. Not a big deal but explanations could be better and I fail to
understand why 10 vs 24 hours drives different categories.

W5URF
Just started digital HF with FT8 after reworking my antenna and station after a long absence. Not
trying to compete, only gathering experience. Should have read more carefully about start and end
times, as well as operating periods and breaks. Didn't realize until trying to create my Cabrillo
file that WSJT-X has a contest logging mode option that likely would have made logging easier. Eh,
live and learn. It was fun nonetheless.
