4U1UN
It was my first time to operate 4U1UN for a contest. My name is Yoshi HB9HDV/JL1LFB. I joined the
UNARC last November and started to operate the station. I was happy that I did not feel any latency
even though I operated remotely from Geneva.
Unfortunately, I could not use 10m band because of the high SWR (at 2.0+). So, I had to stay either
15 or 20m during the day.

I would like to apologize to the stations calling me under the noise level because I could not hear
them! It was due to the permanent QRN at S5-S7 level across the bands. However, I started to use two
antennas, one for TX and the other for RX, and I could reduce the noise level for certain bands.

I have to apologize for those stations with which I could not complete the QSO. Due to the technical
problem, I had more than 20 sudden failures of the connection to the Radio and it took about 5 to 40
minutes to come back. It was frustrating and I did not feel good for the stations. Due to this
problem, I almost abandoned on Saturday morning and stopped operating for several hours. I hope that
we will find a solution before the next contest.

As it was my first long hours of pile-ups, my head started not to copy the call signs quickly,
especially during the last hour of the contest I will try to improve my capabilities for the next
time.

CU Next time,

Yoshi

Low bands great 40m-160m Friday night. Storms Saturday night
caused QRN to wipe out 160m. 40m was okay and 80m was better
reception and able to make ffew QSOs with low power. Severe
storms and close-by tornado caued me to close down early Saturday
night sooner than I had anticipated. High bands were good to
Asia early-late afternoon and FB to Europe my morning here at my
QTH. Looking foward to next year, perhaps with a change in
strategy and hoping for better weather.

Operated in SOLP with small antenna overlay. Due to other commitments, did only a part-time vs. an
all-out effort on all contest bands 160 through 10 meters. Ran my IC7300 into a multiband linked
coax fed dipole operating as a 5/2 wavedoublet on 15 meters and a 7/2 wave doublet on 10 meters,
basically my 75 meter dipole resonant at 3850 kHz with a 10 meter quarter wave (accounting for
velocity factor) of RG59 75 ohm coax in series with
my RG8X feed line at the feed point. Provides a very good match with low
SWR without the IC7300 internal tuner on 10 and 15 meters, QST had an
article on this trick back in the 1960s. The 7/2 wave doublet
provides 8 dBd lobes to NE SE SW NW with the antenna wire axis EW on
10 meters. Used my wire vertical antenna system over 18 elevated
radials as a quarter wave vertical on 40, a quarter wave inverted L
on 80 with a horizopntial section rigged with the 40 meter vertical
radiator, and as a 1/8 wave inverted L on 160 with the 80 meter
inverted L and series L loading at the feed point. Also end fed the
40 meter quarter wave vertical on 20 as an end fed 1/2 wave dipole
with a 49:1 impedance matching transformer at the feed point, with only a
small short single wire counterpoise on the shield side of the feed
line at the feed point to decouple common mode current in the feed
line. The 18 nominal 6-8 foot above ground level radials were
present under the 20 meter EFHW dipole setup but were not directly connected to the feed point
shield. 14 of the 18 radials are nominal quarter wave on 40 meters. The remaining 4 can be set up
for nominal 40 meters or extended to a nominal quarter wave on 80 meters by jumpering in extensions
that doubles the radial length to approximately 70 feet from
35 feet. Depending on the band and frequency within the band, a small shunt matching coil across
the feed point is used to bring in a near perfect 1 to 1 SWR. On 80/75 meters jumpered segments at
the far end of the horizontal section of the inverted L are jumpered in and out to move the antenna
resonant frequency around the band. The 40 meter 1/4 wave vertical arrangement can also be used as
a 3/4 wave vertical over the elevated radials on 15 meters. The 80 meter inverted L setup can also
be used as a 3/4 wave inverted L on 30 meters by adding a few feet to the horizontal section far end
to move its fundamental resonance down to the vicinity of 3.4 MHz.

Very good conditions, especially on the higher frequency bands. Nice
to hear so many Hawaiian stations on. Was fun working the Marshall
Islands DXpedition V73WW on 40 and 10.

Wish that CQers with 5s, Hs, Is and Ss in their call sign QRQ a bit
and increase thier dit weighting. Difficult copying a call like
HS5IS at 50 WPM, or any other call with 5, H, I, or S in it! Is that high
speed CQing really saving you much time Probably resulting in lots
of busted contacts for those trying to work you, and lots of thier
time wasted having to listen over and over before and after a
contact to make sure your call is copied correctly. Contest rules should
include a busted call for the sender as well as the copier of a
misread call sign if if the CQ and associated station callsign was
sent at anything over say 35 WPM.

2BSIQ First Attempt - by DK6XZ

First and foremost, my sincere gratitude goes to Frank (DL2CC) and Harald (DL2SAX) for their
incredible generosity in allowing me to use their contest station, DQ2C, for my first-ever attempt
at 2BSIQ operation. It was an exciting challenge, and I couldn’t have asked for better hosts and
mentors.

The contest location, near Ulm and the former SWR medium-wave broadcasting station, was conveniently
close to my home QTH. However, my journey to the contest was quite an adventure—I first had to
drive 700 km back from Berlin to my home on Thursday before heading to the station on Friday
afternoon to familiarize myself with the setup. Seeing the station for the first time, I knew I had
a lot to absorb quickly!

About DQ2C

DQ2C is a well-designed and robust contest station, primarily built for M/S operations. It features
two towers and a sophisticated automated switching matrix, expertly developed by Harald.

Antenna setup:

Optibeam OB17-4 with quadplexer (3L40, 4L20, 4L15, 6L10)

Optibeam OB16-3 with triplexer (4L20, 4L15, 8L10)

Vertical/sloping dipole for 80m

54m broadcast tower for 160m

RX antennas (Beverages) had to be removed due to seasonal fieldwork

For filtering and power, we used W3NQN (LP) and 4O3A (HP) band-pass filters, along with reliable
solid-state amplifiers from Expert.

The Challenge Before the Contest

A major pre-contest challenge was configuring the FlexRadio 6700 for SO2R operation in combination
with the DXlog logging software. This required adjusting the existing M/S setup, which was
previously optimized for N1MM. Huge thanks to Valentin (DL4VK), who dedicated countless hours to
getting everything up and running—including audio recording functionality. In fact,
troubleshooting continued until just ten minutes before the contest started! Even Harald provided
remote support via a late-night phone session from 200 km away. Their dedication and enthusiasm were
truly inspiring, and I will never forget their incredible help.

Introduction to 2BSIQ

A heartfelt thank you goes to Jose (CT1BOH) for his invaluable presentation on the principles and
execution of 2BSIQ. His insights, alongside tips from Filipe (CT1ILT) and Braco (E77DX), gave me the
confidence to attempt this challenging technique. After a decade away from SOP contesting since WRTC
2014, I deeply appreciated their support.

I also want to acknowledge Chris (9A5K)SK for his outstanding work on DXlog. Thanks to Krassy (K1LZ)
and the development team for keeping this fantastic software alive. The simulation tool was a
game-changer, allowing me to practice 2BSIQ in the weeks leading up to the contest. It was thrilling
to achieve rates of 270-300 QSOs per hour, peaking at 500 Q/h in "10 last QSO".

Contest Highlights

ARRL DX Contest is generally considered a "slow" contest from Central Europe, exception is the
remarkable QSO number achieved by Manfred (DJ5MW) last year. Analyzing his logs gave me hope that,
at the semi-peak of the sunspot cycle, even greater numbers might be possible. However, this
year’s propagation conditions from DL were far from ideal. While Southern Europe seemed less
affected by geomagnetic disturbances, our location suffered considerably.

First and second night: 20m never opened. Low bands were usable, with some activity on 40m, but
without RX antennas, the top bands only provided a handful of multipliers. Best hourly rate: 131
QSOs.

First day: High bands were fair but unimpressive, 10m opening very late. Best hourly rate: 120
QSOs.

Second night: Absolutely brutal—only 25 QSOs in an hour! I briefly switched to S&P for a while and
took a 2-hour nap, but conditions remained unchanged. At sunrise, I managed two dozen additional
QSOs, including some multipliers on 80m.

Second day: Slightly better than Saturday, but still no major openings. However, the last 90 minutes
brought a solid opening on 40m, which helped add a few valuable multipliers.

Despite the tough conditions, my enthusiasm for 2BSIQ remained high. The first night was mostly
spent in an "alternate CQ" mode on 40m/80m. After a loss of one station in the first three hours, I
focused more on weak signals on 80m/160m. The real excitement came during daylight hours with 2B
combinations on 10m/15m and 15m/20m, where 2BSIQ operation became more apparent—at least during
peak pile-ups. I was able to synchronize CQs consistently, but overall caller volume was too low to
sustain the technique for long periods. Nevertheless, I successfully hit 300 Q/h rates 51 times
(measured in last 10 QSO segments) and maintained good synchronization.

Key Takeaways from 2BSIQ

From this experience, I’ve learned/confirmed that speeds below 38 WPM don’t work well for
2BSIQ—unless operating in slower hours with traditional SO2R alternate CQing. A minimum rate of
approximately 250 Q/h is required for true synchronized QSOing. It’s a challenging but thrilling
technique that brings an entirely new level of excitement to contesting. CW is music, and I truly
admire those who execute flawless 2BSIQ operations in massive Caribbean pile-ups—hats off to
them!

There is often a debate about SO2R (a hardware category) versus 2BSIQ (an operating technique). In
my view, this distinction is not entirely correct. Instead, 2BSIQ should be seen as a higher-level
operational mode, where QSOs are logged in a sequence such as R1 R2 R1 R2 R1 R1 R2, and so on. Not
to equal with Alternate CQing.

Final Thoughts

This contest was an unforgettable experience. The DQ2C team and I gained valuable insights, both in
station improvements and operating strategies. Special thanks again to DL4VK for his support—he
even kept me supplied with food and drinks, as I was too excited to sleep properly! Over four days
and three nights, I managed just about three hours of sleep.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated in the contest and contributed to the camaraderie.
Congratulations to the top scorers—N2NT, K1LZ, ZF1A, K3LR, W2FU, EF6T, P40L, ZF5T, and many
others. A special shoutout to Holger (DL9EE), who also made his first 2BSIQ attempt from DP7D and
narrowly outscored me. His breakdown confirmed two known weak points in our setup—something
we’ll work on improving for next time.

Looking forward to seeing you in the next contest!

73, Suad DK6XZ

Thanks the organizers for the contest and all who dug my qrp sigs out
of the noise. This year's event was not at all comparable with that of
2024; at least for me as a qrp stn - a score less than 40% of that in 2024.
Signal strengths were down a lot and participation seems down as well.
There were long periods without any qso, even without any new callsign
heard!

I am on a work assignment in Antarctica, and wanted to hand out the
CE9 multiplier in this contest, just like I did in the previous
years. This time, it was very tough. At the beginning of the event,
the K index was already climbing towards a value of 5, and all the
signals I could hear had a very strong auroral sound. I spent about
two hours on the air to achieve exactly two contacts, so I gave up.
This situation did not improve before Sunday evening when finally
geomagnetic activity decreased, and I was able to hear and work
stations on 15m. So I ended up with a little more than 150 QSOs and
submit these as a single band entry. That's the way conditions can
be in Antarctica. 73 from Neumayer III Research Station!

One thing is certain, the EU record on 10 m will not be for this year!
Thanks to Gildas F4HQZ for his warm welcome and the loan of his
beautiful setup. 7 over 7 el on 10 meters gave me the opportunity to
hear very weak signals. 25% of the time with preamplifier 2 on the
IC-7610, from this quiet location near the Atlantic Ocean.
Congratulations to the guys from Eastern Europe, for the very nice
scores because it's obviously more complicated to achieve than here in
Western Europe. People further south in Europe have certainly
suffered less from the very high A & K indices. 73, Lee F5MUX

Great contest! I operated from a city location with a very simple and restricted setup—a 40m long
wire antenna just 4-5 meters above the ground, tuned with an SGC automatic tuner. Using an old Icom
IC-756PRO at 100 watts, I was thrilled to make 326 QSOs on 21 MHz despite the challenges. Big thanks
to everyone who pulled my signal out of the noise! Looking forward to the next one. 73!

Another ARRL DX in the records!
Despite high flux and sunspot number,
the bands conditions were challenging.
High bands opening was slow and closing shifted ahead,
with a lot of watered signals and deep/fast qsb.
The second day 20m were closing early, leaving a 1+ hour
gap in the 40m opening which occurred ~45 min before the end.
Anyways the ARRL-DX CW is always the nicest contest event of the year.
Thanks everyone for the QSOs.

Contest fun in the Dolomites

Hi all from Wolf IN3TWX. This is a crazy story. Winter contest outside in the winter landscape for a
few hours this past weekend. Meadow at 1330m with a free take-off toward North America. Not an easy
find. 15m only. Single-op. Paper log, not assisted. Worked up into West Coast U.S. and Canada.
Technically speaking, everything worked out.

Prepared a 4el for 15m. EZNEC 7 file attached. Wanted to limit activity to afternoon hours, thus the
15m choice. Just a few hours each day. With Mr. Murphy freezing our telescopic mast it eventually it
boiled down to be less than an hour on Saturday, and 2 1/2 hours on Sunday. Still: 28 States, 8
Canadian Provinces. Needed to stop soon after sunset, my fingers started freezing.

IN3JXN Erich was great! He was the local finding out the place @ 1330m asl. He got the farmer's
permission and did his own 10m SSB activity, so we both had great fun. Let's say "Type II fun",
which all outdorsy guys will know what it means. It for sure was a great winter experience.

See you all down the log again. Next time.

not particularly satisfactory with a poor score. It's a shame not to have
listened to the IDAHO state which is the last to complete the much
coveted WAS. See you at the next edition hoping to improve everything.
thanks to all the stations that had the patience to connect me. . See you

It is very difficult to QSO with U.S.A. stations using low
power RIG.
I think it is very good a new low power categoly in sigle band
category!!
When the sunrise time at the westcoast in the U.S.A. , I could
heare the very week singal of U.S.A stations in top band.
I used my MV (Micro Vertical antenna) 12mHigh on my blcony +
YAESU FT-710 tranceiver.
My MV antenna was only 3.6m length and it was up only 12m
high from my balcony of my small condminium.
I was surprised that I could QSO many the U.S.A. stations with

VERY GOOD PARTICIPATION FROM US AND DX FOR 80M OPERATION

K2SE
All wire antennas here including two half squares for 40; a triband half square for 20-15-10;
separate collinear antennas for 20 & 15 and I load the 20 meter collinear for 80 (I need a better
solution for this band). Conditions weren't too good Friday night but performance improved starting
Saturday, but not as good as last year. The ACOM 2000A amp was an improvement over my ALS-1300 as it
loafed along at 1300-1400 watts out. Had to quit early Sunday late Sunday afternoon due to a bad
storm that kept crashing our local electric service. Although I have a whole house surge protector
and surge protection in front of my rig I shut down anyway to protect my equipment. Still lots for
fun. Many thanks to our EU friends for stopping by and the rarer DX who picked me out of the
pileups! Hopefully see all next year!

K2UA
Great contest, as always. Conditions were really tough on Saturday; K index was 5 most of the day.
10 didn't open direct
to Europe until 15Z. Nothing like 2024! On Saturday night, we had freezing rain overnight and the
SWR went over 2:1 so
I backed off the power by 3 dB to keep the amplifier happy. Later it warmed up, but then the rotator
froze SE at 19Z as
temperatures dropped quickly 10 degrees below freezing. It was a challenging weekend but activity
was good and I was glad
to be on the air!

K3CCR
K3CCR is the club station at the Collington continuing-care
retirement community at FM 18OW in MD, just east of DC. As the
only CW op I (N3UM) did SO U HP in the 2025 ARRL CW DX test. I
hoped to beat my 2024 ARRL CW result of 1280 Qs and 1.55 M score.
Nope; I got 0.84 X my 2024 Qs & 0.86 X my mults for 0.71 X the
score. Kp was ~1-2 in 2024 but ~3-4 this year, and I had a stomach
bug Thurs. From 14-21Z Sat, I was 8-30 Qs behind 2024. But, at QRT
0234Z Sun, tired & with low bands dead, I had 749 Qs. In 2024, QRT
was at 0451 Sun. with 959 Qs, 210 more; I never got close agn. At
start on 40 M 00-0136Z I ran for 96 Qs at 60/hr, then down 5 kHZ &
ran for 82 more 0139-0250Z at 70/hr. I clicked spots for 56 Qs, so
234 40-M Qs at 04Z. I got 70 80-M Qs 0403 to 0509Z QRT, 29 in a
run, 70/hr. From 1348-1513Z, 15 M was hot; I ran for 111 Qs at 93/
hr, then clicked 1503-1513Z for 12 Qs in 11 min. On 10 M I got 86
Qs 1524-1645Z, clicks, & quit to eat. Back 1840Z on 15 M I clicked
for 17 Qs in 17 min. Then on 20 M 1903-2059Z I clicked for 108 Qs,
56/hr. On 40 M 2109-2116Z I got 6 Qs in 6 min. & quit to eat. Back
on 40 M 2335-0121Z I clicked for 68 Qs; slow, 38/hr. Then 0129Z to
0234Z QRT I band-hopped for 13 20-M Qs, 5 40-M Qs, & 19 80-M Qs &
quit to return early. Back on 20 M 1236-1402Z I got 75 Qs in 3
runs on 2 freqs, 66/hr, then clicked for only 6 more in 15 min. On
15 M, better; 102 Qs clicking 1422-1624Z, 50/hr. Got 14 Qs on 10 M
1627-1645Z, 47/hr, then broke for a full lunch & quick nap. Back
at 1924Z I hopped bands for 15 10-M Qs, 31 15-M Qs, & 54 20-M Qs
for a total of 100 Qs by 2250Z, and quit to avoid a late supper.

Conditions were good from the QTH for most of the contest. My antenna was very effective on 40 and
15. It was really nice to be able to put in the time to make the most of the contest. There were
lots of FB ops out there who patiently worked through the qrm. Shoutout to the K3 for humming right

Operating from Parks, Arizona. I focused on 10 meters using my mighty
4 element yagi up 40 feet. It did not disappoint with good runs to JA
and one to Europe. I also did quite a bit of listening on 80 meters
using a beverage antenna in the woods, fun to hear so many stations
including many in Europe. A few even heard my 80 meter inverted V
transmit antenna. Worked one Eu on 160 as well.

Thanks for the QSOs - 73, Dana

Station: Elecraft K4/KPA500 400 watts to:

Thank you ARRL! My first ARRL DX Contest was in 1964. They were 2 weekends log then.

This was a very good contest. In 2016 thru 2022 I made less that 70 contacts on 10 meters. When the
band came to life in 2023 I made 1056! This year was a bit down in conditions from last year.
Thanks all the QRPers for the 70 contacts in my log. DM2M made it in on 4 bands! And for the first
time in recent memory I had less than 10 W/VE callers and fewer than 5 stations that refused to sign
their calls within 120 seconds. We are making progress!
Greg K8GL

Wow I had 1000 contacts and a million points best score I ever
had in any contest. I was about 95 percent S&P. I am getting

This was my first solo contest! Took a bit to figure out how to get a HAM2K POLO ADIF into Cabrillo
format (hence the late submission). Ran a wire out the window of my dorm and got to talk to the
whole world on my bug.

Conditions were great for the most part As always, a few ruined several great contacts when they
keep calling despite the receiving station calling for a specific contact I understand that when a
great run happens, you don't want to break it off, but, seriously, 20 contacts before giving a
callsign I'm sure that adds to the DUPE list

Only spent about an hour in this year's Skynet contest. Then had some trouble with N1MM keying the
transmitter and my call every time I hit return to enter a contact in the log, confusing the Op I
had just finished with. Conditions seemed to be very good with the little time I listened this year.

Conditions were best described as "unsettled." Good openings were
followed by poor ones and with limited time to operate, the result
was
a lower score this year. Hoping for an improvement in next year's
effort. Go FRC!

When I checked the propagation forecast before the contest I
didn't have much hope for any band to yield much DX let alone 40
but to my surprise 40 was open to EU/AF and some were real S9 in
MT and I even worked a few with 100W. & a Hustler mobile whip
mounted fixed on a 20' mast in my backyard. It proved to hear sigs
2 s units better than my full size gnd mounted vert. & got out btr.

Contest rules states:- "4.2.2 DX stations send a signal report and power as a number or
abbreviation"
Lot of DX stations sent KW or only K.
As a QRP station I've sent QRP abbreviation, denoting my power, which were not understood by lot of
correspondents, probably because a popular logging sw for ARRL contest W/VE stations doesn't accept
it. I made it clearer to some correspondents by sending or adding 5 or 5W in some QSOs.
Finally, the log submission robot didn't accept QRP as an abbreviation for my power, either. I've
replaced QRP with 5, the log to be accepted.
I'll be glad to see some hints or addition to the rules which abbreviations are acceptable as (QRP)
power exchange for DX stations!

Well, that was an experience. Station assembled, and fully shaken down on Friday evening, and I got
some early rest before the start. I chose to start on 40m, SWR was sky high, and unusable! I faffed
for quite a while; but could not do anything about 40m for the first night. We thing we have a
corrosion problem and damp that caused the issue. I was then confined to 80/160 overnight, and next
day had to make a 40m dipole, and sacrifice 160 for the 2nd night. HF conditions not as good as
last year, due to solar disturbances. Some US stations wanted to send their names, and would not
give their State, so not in log. Some others didn't seem to know the rules that DX work USA; mainly
in EU, so had to contest with that. Only had 1 frequency fight, when a loud E77 decided to come onto
my frequency! Enjoyed participating in this one for first time seriously

This is my busy weekend with Radio club on Friday night and
running sound at both services at Church which takes all morning
on Sunday. It was a fun contest with seemingly endless contacts
available on Saturday. I got back on Sunday afternoon for a
little while and I had some trouble finding people to work Lots
of Dupes! The station performed flawlessly as usual. I spent
almost all my time on 10 and 15 meters as my numbers reflect. The
nice thing about those bands is you dont have to weed through so
many US stations since most everything you hear is DX. Ill chime
in here on the cut number discussion. Some of them are fine; like
ATT, 3TT, 5TT, K and KW. But E, NN and 73 Whats up with that I
simply logged what I heard instead of trying to interpret some of
the nonsense. It will be interesting to see if I get docked. I
heard many PVRCers but of course didnt work any since we
couldnt. Local stations I remember hearing are K4XL, N3CW, N4QWF
and NJ4Q.

Portable from Flint Peak, DM04vd. 5 watts to a homebrew half

Good condx on the upper bands. 10m was best out here.
Conditions to EU were poor compared to last year. I worked
five times the EU stations in 2024 that I worked in 2025, BUT,
I worked twice as many Africa stations this year over last year.
I was very pleased to make some contacts with some DX
outlaws, and even get 3 DITs from Fred! Also worked a FEW
CWops pals located in some pretty exotic locations. :-)
My hearty congratulations and THANKS for your patience,
and for adding 157 QRP DX QSOs to my station log.

Bands were in good shape, but the weather conditions were terrible here
Friday night and Saturday night. Storms both nights. Saturday was the
worst night with heavy rains causing a poorly grounded transformer
somewhere in the neighborhood to arc sporadically for long time
frames, killing 40/80, and 160 for long periods. Then Saturday evening
Murphy showed up at dinner out, and poisoned my food. At 5am Sunday
morning my XYL found me hugging the "bowl" in the bathroom. Never made
it to the shack early enough Sunday morning, after that little adventure,
to hit 10 and 15 for the best EU DX prime time. Oh, did I mention we lost
power Saturday morning for two hours right at peak EU on 10 and 15m!Slugged
it out with the QRN and all Murphies games trying to break 500 plus Qs, but
Murphy won this one. Better luck next time I guess. 73, Gene N9TF.

When compared to my last time ARRL CW (2023 - amazing conditions), this year was
much weaker (only 75% of QSOs). The conditions were under average (lower rates
and shorter openings). Also, my antenna for 20m was not good - so I miss around
400 qso on 20m.

But still, this is my favourite 2BSIQ contest and I enjoyed it most of time.
Thanks for all the callers, and also to OK1MU, OK2ZAW and his QRO.CZ ham parts
company for support and technical solution.

First contest with my new vanity call OR7K.
After using OP4K for the last 19 years it was time to change the call.

Had a blast in the contest even if the propagation was harsh at some times.
Spent only 12h12 on the chair as I had other things sheduled past weekend.
Happy with the result.

Hope to spend more hours next year.

P40L
Congratulation to everyone for all the fine results this past weekend, including P44W with a new QRP
record, the ZF1A team with another fine M-S HP result and ZF5T with a great MM score.

We enjoyed following others' progress throughout the weekend on the Online Scoreboard, including
trying to catch-up and then stay ahead of the great work by the V3T team in our category and trying
to catch-up (got close at times, but never quite got there) with the PJ4A team on nearby Bonaire in
the M-S HP category.

We used this contest to continue to experiment with in-band S&P, which has become a necessary
capability to be competitive in multi categories, especially M-S and M2. We felt that this time
(unlike our previous attempts) our in-band S&P was reasonably successful and that over the course of
the weekend the team got better working with timing the interlocks (hardware and software) to
interleave Qs. The in-band station contributed about 500 Qs to our total. For 10, 15 and 20
meters, it used an old Cushcraft A3s on a portable 30' tower situated about 500' from the main
transmit antenna with the element tips pointed at each other (i.e., for maximum rejection) and
interaction was minimal. For 40 and 80, we used the hardware interlock with a 2x2 relay switch to
share the main transmit antennas and both stations listened on the usual beverages remotely situated
in the "Cunucu".

As always, thanks for all the Qs!

73,

The P40L team,

MY FIRST ARRL DX WAS IN 1965, OPERATING AT OH2TI CLUB STATION
I WAS NOW CELEBRATING MY 60-YEAR'S ANNIVERSARY IN THIS FINE CONTEST
MANY THINGS HAVE CHANGED DURING THESE DECADES:
1) NO MORE CHIRPY, CREEPING AND HARSH SIGNALS
3) HAND KEY AND VIBROPLEX WERE THE ONLY WAYS TO MAKE CW
4) 1+ kW AMPS WERE RARE, AND PROHIBITED IN MANY COUNTRIES
5) TODAY, COMPUTERS MAKE THE CW SIGNAL, NO MORE "FISTS" ON THE BANDS.
6) WISHING "GL" OR "73" WERE A COMMON COURTESY, BUT THEY CAN IRRITATE TODAY.
7) "TU" IS THE ONLY "ACCEPTED" COURTESY, AND ALSO SERVES TO END THE QSO.
8) CALL SIGNS ARE MUCH SHORTER, YOU CAN CHOOSE OR BUY A CALL YOU LIKE..
9) ALL IN ALL, THE CW SPEED AND QSO RATES HAVE DOUBLED.
10) CONTEST EXPEDITIONS BECAME EASIER, MORE FLIGHTS AND LESS CUSTOM FORMALITIES
HOWEVER, SOME THINGS HAVE NOT CHANGED: THE EXCITEMENT AND FUN REMAIN THE SAME !!
AS AN OLD MAN (AGE 81), I APPRECIATE THE LONG REST PERIODS WHEN BANDS ARE CLOSED.

Working from Radioklub CERKNO contest location, near ski center
Cerkno. When I came there, I realized that antenna rotor is
blocked, due to very low temperature. So I had to work this
contest with beam turned to north direction! So some week
signals, I know they were there, were imposible to read. On
sunday afternoon and all night, there were some thunderstorms not
far away, because there were a lot of statics on the band.
Dificult conditions.

I didn't have a plan to participate in contest due to family obligations. First 3 QSO's K1LZ, W2FU
and W3LPL was made with 100W and vertical antenna. On Sunday morning I drove my son to ski and found
two hours to setup and play with WL after more than 20 years (I decided to give Writelog a chance
after problems in WPX RTTY with DxLog.net) and made couple of QSO's as HP. So in log, first 3 Q's
have exchange 100, all the others are 1000. Conditions at the time (Sunday morning local) was
strange (not to say poor), a lot's of noise. It was hard to copy even big stations, for example:
K3LR was copied as K3EAR through the noise (that's why it is dupe in log).

No fun contest from UA9. Propagation lasts only few hours. 1kw power does not help to get through
calling 100W Europeans. K1LZ is the only contact on 80m because they can hear so well. Unlike K1TTT
whom me and couple of other local friends could not work because an op, although being loud enough,
could not hear us even when nobody else called. It was nice to give points to old friends and
deserving.

I operated once again from Placencia, a small village at the tip
of a 16 mile long pennisula. My antenna was a two element wire
yagi affixed to a balcony about 20 feet high. I ran about 800w
with my Juma amp and a KX3, which is surprisinly competent with
the AGC adjusted properly. Conditions were OK but steady pileups
were difficult to produce due to the intense competition from EU,
where most US beams are pointed when the band is open that way.
The rate was great on Saturday but dropped significantly on
Sunday. I usually operate SOSB15 but decided to go to 10 this
year at the last minute and was rewared with nice openings.
Thanks the for the Q's. 73 Walt, W0CP

I had U.S. stations asking for my power when I was correctly sending my province.
It wasn't just because I was a Canadian station either. I saw many U.S. stations
asking for power from other U.S. stations when they should have been asking for state.
This was happening a lot! I have a few busted calls in my log for these reasons.
I didn't have much time anyway, but it was frustrating, and I just gave up.
Next time the ARRL should just set the exchange to be state, province or "DX".

Wow! Outstanding conditions, despite a disastrous prop.prediction from ARRL just prior to the
contest...

I beat my 2014 score (that earned me the plaque for High Canada) by a bunch ... I think this was my
highest score in any contest going back decades! Ten Meters reminded me of the late 'fifties, and as
for 15M ... amazing!

Used my standard contesting setup - an Icom 7610 at 100 W, with an inverted vee fed with open wire
line, and my trusty tribander, now working top-notch, at 40 feet.

city lot, vertical on fence. 20 15 and 10 was okay. 40 meters was useless as QRN cant do
anything. no 80 antenna either. Stuck on 10 15 and 20 meters. All i could do limited antenna and
limited time. Small station set up for now.

40m entry again this year, but also made some QSOs on 10m. Been meaning to design & build a 40m
3-element reversible wire yagi for a while - built a trial version pointed to NA just in time for
this contest, and was pleasantly surprised at how it went ... given it's only 1/4 wavelength high
near a hill top. 10m antenna is 4-el wire yagi (spiderbeam) at 10m. Radio is a TS-480HX at 100W
output.

40m was its usual noisy self at this time of the year (thunderstorm activity), so my apologies for
those I sent IMI to due to their exchange being blatted by QRN. Thanks to everyone who called or
answered, and my apologies to anyone I couldn't hear under the QRN.

Thanks to the managers for running the contest, and look forward to hearing everyone next contest!

W3HKK
What a wacky contest! K=3 with ssn climbing from disappointingly low to above 200, but with
unstable polar paths. Only one mainland asian in the log ( a weak fluttery signal from 9N7AA that
we nursed thru a pile up.)

160 started well with 23 DX entities on night one, with substantial QRN....until my ACOM 1000 amp
shut down and out for the rest of the contest, and I continued on, running the 7610 barefoot on all
bands.

Still, we logged 764 Q's-268 DX entities- and 613,452 pts in about 20 hrs ota.
100 unique dx entities got into the log....but, unusually, zero Chinese and zero Philipines.
Heard V85 but couldnt break the pile.

After good steady qso streams throughout, albeit with many ups and downs, the final 4 hours turned
into a slog, as new stations petered out and we were forced to continuously rotate through the
40-20-15-10m bands sweeping/searching for new ones.

I can only imagine what the extra 10dB of RF might have done for my score/rates had the 7 yr old
amp held up for the duration.

This was a fun operation, though 10m was a bit slow at first. On the last hour of the contest, I
had a choice between 40m, which was really active, or 10m and noting it was unusually active - like
a station in Hawaii. I had hoped to work VKs - and prayers to work ZLs. At first, I actually got
some new multipliers (Uruguay and Chile) but had no luck with Japan at first. Then I heard a
medium-weak signal - and almost had a heart attack: a ZL! I got him on the first call! When I
submitted the log to LoTW, the ZL was already CONFIRMED! New country/entity. Made my whole
operation. 73 Kevin WB0POH

the remote GooDies to W7AYT's QTH in Concord for the rest of the weekend.
Overall, the band condx. were quite amazing altho there were some
low-level Geomagnetic storms throughout the weekend.
The 3-el Stepp-IR, Shorty-40 and 80-INV-V (all @55') worked great, altho
occasionally on 20m (one of my poorest bands) the Stepp-IR would display
a high SWR - clicking on Calibrate would resolve it.
And of course, the internet dropouts were the usual pain-in-the-ass,
however with patience, I got through it. If I seemed to briefly
disappear, blame the internet for that - the operator was stone-sober.
