noisy, but the DX was still coming. Saturday night, the band was
quiet and all kinds of signals were coming through. My only
issue was not able to stay up all night Saturday night to work

I opted for the 40m single band assisted category, which was probably not a good decision given the
conditions on the high bands. I looked enviously at the high QSO rates that the guys ran on 10/15
and 20m. For this reason, the activity on 40m was probably lower than last year. Long periods
without pile ups and many hours with less than 40 QSOs/hour. Many dupes towards the end of the
contest. Nevertheless, it was a lot of fun.
The station setup is competitive using a 2 el Quad full size @100ft.

DP1POL is located at Neumayer Station III in Dronning Maud Land,
Antarctica. I have been working here regularly since 2002, and
this is my ninth participation in the ARRL DX Contest from KC4.
Conditions were good on the high bands, even though I lost part
of a band opening during the second night due to an ongoing
aurora. I could not make myself heard in North America on 80m or
40m. The final result is quite far away from my top score in 2014,
but I am still quite happy with it considering the circumstances.
Both contest days were full working days here at the research
station. The log will be uploaded to LotW, printed cards are
available via my QSL manager DL1ZBO.

Thanks for the contest, had a great time. Propagation must have
been excellent because my antennas aren't. I'm still getting
moved in. One end-fed half wave for 40/20/10 and a severely
abused 80m antenna that served on other bands as well (but not
happily). I'm using window feed-throughs so although the exchange
was 100W, that was aspirational. Functionally, I managed 50W on
80m and 20W on the other bands. Looking forward to gettnig more
functional antennas in place, although this makes "room for
improvement" easy.

This year's participation in the ARRL International DX CW Contest from Glasgow City was an adventure
marked by the thrill of overcoming noisy band conditions with a simple yet effective setup.
Operating 90 watts with a straightforward vertical wire antenna, approximately 10 meters in height,
demonstrated that even minimalist arrangements could yield substantial contacts under
less-than-ideal conditions.

Despite the challenges posed by the noise across the bands, the contest was an exhilarating
experience, thanks to the surprisingly good activity on 40 meters. It was a pleasure to connect with
so many fellow enthusiasts, each contact adding to the richness of the event. The sense of community
and shared purpose was palpable, even through the static.

I extend my heartfelt thanks to all who worked with me during the contest. The interactions were not
only a testament to the skills and persistence of the operators but also to the spirit of amateur
radio. Engaging with so many operators under such conditions was a reminder of why we pursue this
hobby: for the joy of connection, the challenge of the chase, and the satisfaction of making contact
against the odds.

To those who shared this slice of the spectrum with me, thank you. Your participation made the 2024
ARRL International DX CW Contest a memorable one for me, reaffirming my passion for CW and the
endless possibilities it presents, even with the simplest of antennas and amidst the noisiest of
conditions.

make this contest unmissable and wonderful. Happy with the result
achieved which made it possible for me to obtain the WAS award that I had
always been chasing. See you at the next edition hoping to improve
everything. An affectionate thank you to all the stations that had the
patience to connect me. 73 to all of IZ8GUQ Giovanni

I have backache, so I had to take a more rest than usual for the contest.
But having a good condx, I tried to take a seat as longer as possible.
After high bands open, having low back pain, I had to qrt to take a rest at
around 06-10z(1st day) & 07-10z(2nd day) for low bands open unfortunately.
As a result I had better scores than the last year as following summaries.
This time I could have much more runs for about 30% of total QSOs.
Never happened before in years!
I hoped for this situation even from a small station.
Heard some stations on 160m but no luck.
Mni tnx for picking me up and patience.
Many guys always there like: K3LR,K1LZ,N6RO,NR4M,K1TTT,ND7K,VA7RR,W7RM,N7DX,etc
and it's good signs about the bands open&close.
Sorry about N2IC's absence for CB0ZA this time, so I only worked NM on one
band :-)
Very nice to have a new category "Limited Antennas Overlay".
I have hoped for having this kind of a category and am glad the ARRL nicely
decided to do it like ARRL 10m contest.
MNI TNX!
Thank you for all the QSOs and nice to say(key) Hi! again to friends!

It is very difficult to QSO with U.S.A. stations using low
power RIG.
I think it is very good a new low power categoly in sigle band
category!!
When the sunrise time at the westcoast in the U.S.A. , I could
heare the very week singal of U.S.A stations in top band.
I used my MV (Micro Vertical antenna) 12mHigh on my blcony +
Elecraft K2 tranceiver.
My MV antenna was only 3.6m length and it was up only 12m
high from my balcony of my small condminium.
I was surprised that I could QSO many U.S.A. stations with
my MV antenna!

K3CCR
K3CCR is the club station at the Collington continuing-care
retirement community at FM 18OW in MD, just east of DC. As the
only CW op, I (N3UM) did SOHP U in the 2024 ARRL CW DX test. I
hoped to beat my best ARRL CW score here, 1.25 M in 2023. I did
that; 1.06 X the Q pts and 1.17 X the mults for 1.24 X the 2023
score claim. Very low Kp & high SFI helped; it was fun to take
full advantage. At 0Z start, 40 M was hot. I ran for 151 Qs by
0155Z, 79.5/hr. Then I clicked spots for 133 Qs 0159-0406Z, 63/
hr. Just 1 more 40-M Q by 0415Z, but QSY to 80 M got 67 Qs with
spots 0420 to 0512Z QRT, 77/hr. From 1350-1608Z I clicked spots
for 140 15-M Qs, 61/hr, then 36 10-M Qs, 83/hr 1613-1639Z by QRT
to eat. Back 1832-1907Z I got 31 more 10-M Qs, then 150 20-M Qs
1915-2136Z, 64/hr, and 50 15-M Qs in 52 min, till 2240Z. Good
rates w/spots; CQ sigs loud, ops skilled. Supper BK till 0017Z,
then got 92 40-M Qs by 0207Z, 23 in a run at 53/hr. Clicked agn
for 30 20-M Qs in 33 min, 0212-0245. Took a 30-min BK, then got
54 80-M Qs & all 24 160-M Qs by 0451Z QRT. Back on 20 M 1349Z,
41 Qs at 79/hr cleared the bandmap by 1420Z. On 10 M at 1424Z a
try to run got only 9 Qs. But, clicks got 107 more for 161 Qs by
1609Z start of lunch BK. At 1603Z, my score was 1.251 M, 1.3 K
more than my final 2023 score; fewer Qs but more ctys in 2024.
Back at 1844Z, 29 10-M Qs & 55 15-M Qs cleared the bandmaps. But
on 20 M, I got 80 Qs by 2245Z. Rate slowed; I quit then to avoid
a late supper. Rare ctys; 5W, 9V, CE0, FR, HL, TI9, & ZD7.

K3GW
Amazing conditions

K3TW
"It was great to work so many QRP, 5 watt, DX stations thanks to excellent band conditions."

K4EES
None... Short, but great time

K4SXT
Antenna is a stealth 29' wire vertical and a 66' inverted U with top at 25'- both in same tree fed
together at base. It is invisible to my neighbors. Of course a hefty tuner is required (I use an
ATR-30). All contacts were Search and Pounce - My experience has shown that a low power station
can use multipliers as an equalizer. Besides, IMHO, a DX contest is for fun and my way is less
stressful - I am too old now to be on the receiving end of the pile-up.

K5RX
Had a terrible cold, so just wanted to make an appearance. I
thought 500 Qs would be great, but was probably out of question.
Well, great conditions were the best cold medicine! They were at
least as good as I've seen in my 56 years working this contest.
Managed to operate almost 23 hours. Every time I sat down, I
found an abundance of stations to work. For the first time in a
long time, I enjoyed a lack of line noise in all directions,
except some to the NW. The only hardware failure was the NW
Beverage which quit working the day the contest started.

K5XU
Great conditions!

K5ZD
Wow. Amazing conditions brought in new areas of the
world that we don't normally get to work. Plus very
good low band conditions to build the multipliers.

K6NA
As others have noted, conditions on all bands were out of this world-- maybe the best I've ever
experienced in 64 years of HF contesting! The overall activity level was correspondingly high, too.
My only regret is not planning for a full-time entry. Onward to the next one! 73, K6NA

K6NR
I was in Scottsdale, Arizona visiting my daughter and family but got
into the contest remotely using my station near Victorville. I could
not do a full effort, but got to experience the great conditions
everyone has been talking about. I spent most of my 9 hours on 15 and
10 where I had good EU and JA runs. Many stations of similar strength
were calling from EU making it hard to pick folks out.

Thanks for the QSOs - 73, Dana

K6QLF
This is the FIRST-time entry into the ARRL Dx Contest as K6QLF
for the Amateur Radio Club of Alamda (ARCA)
This was a completely ad-HOC operation to demonstrate remote operating
for the Amateur Radio Club of Alameda (ARCA) monthly club meeting live
from the Oakland Yacht Club in Alameda, running as K6QLF, remotely
from the Ramona QTH. 50 QSOs demonstrates that a last-minute
remote operation can indeed be productive. Come visit us at: ARCHAHam.Org.

Good times in cycle 25! Wow 10 meters! Can't wait until 2035.

K7NJ
Started late due to computer problems. CW Skimmer didn't work right, so assistance was only by
telnet.

Operated total of 29:44 hours.

Conditions were excellent. Band was extremely quiet. Saturday night had simultaneous openings to
Europe and JA. Instantaneously switched antennas and directions made this easy without needing to
wait for a rotator to move a beam, etc.

Antennas: 40M 8-Circle, 160M vertical with 40M tuner at base, 3 bi-directional Beverages.

Rig: K3S and ACOM 2000A amp.

K8GL
WOW! Thanks for the contest! A great weekend.

K8LF
Good conditions. Best I can remember. No 160M antenna so lost
those Mults. 80M was better than expected. Worked Antarctica
twice! Station worked great other than RF into remote rotor
control had to cycle power to rotor box about everyother time I
need to rotate antenna. I was in and out casual kind of
operation but happy with score.

IC-7300 and 100 Watts for the best propagation I have experienced as a ham. Antenna is an Inverted

just went up and down the bands as a S&P, and running a little bit. The EU pileups are CRAZY. See

propagation on 15M was terrific. from NJ i worked a lot of stations in europe on feb 18 using 100

Wow, conditions on 10 were just hot. Guess they were good
everywhere because there was no loss of DX to work in this
contest. Recently picked up the DX Commander Classic Vertical and
when one antenna didn't work, switched over to this one, mostly
for the transmit but was able to get through with the switch
between the beam, Windom and vertical. Blessed to have the
selection.Weather this weekend was nothing but rain and gld it
didn't include any lightning so time spent indoors was time well
spent. Along with, of course, keeping the rest of the family
entertained between times in the seat of course. Not a barn burner
but glad to provide extra points to the club. On to the next!

I guess propagation forecasts are just that, forecasts and the
dismal forecast for this contest weekend did not match what really
took place on the air. It was like old times working 5 watt JAs on
10 & 15 and getting an EU pile up on 15 & I only ran 50 w.great fun

Conditions were great in the ARRL DX contest (Feb 17 - 18) on 10
Meters. I was not going to work it much this year as looking for CB0ZA on 6, but decided to give it
a go Saturday afternoon. I operated fixed mobile QRP on 10 Meters. Radio 25 year old TS-850, hand
key, & paper log. Saturday afternoon was unseasonably cold, but logged CB0ZA to start the contest
off (10, not 6! Worked South Americans, Japan, Alaska, and OG1F and RU1A over the pole at 2315z! I
have never done that before on 10M. Also worked 3 stations in China, copied V85RH, but could not
touch that pileup !

Sunday morning was warmer and 10 open to Europe. Eastern and Western Europe strong. At 1810z found
7Q6M up the band with a loud signal on 28.145 MHz and logged. Western Europe got louder around
1900z. Worked 60 watt MD2C for an all time new one!" Then loud MW5B, MM2N and EI7M. Was going to
call it a day - but saw spots for Japan around 2300z. Went out again, worked 16 loud stations in
Japan along with ZL4MDM. V85RH was much louder, but a huge unruly pileup. The low A and K indices
helped over the "over the North Pole 10 Meter propagation.

I operated the contest with a stealthy 40m tree-mounted vertical with a loading coil for 80m and a
short temporary/portable parasitic vertical array for 20 - 10. Here in the HOA, operating is a
struggle. I can't even put up a dipole, but I don't qualify for the "limited antennas" overlaY
bucause I use vertical reflectors on 20 - 10 to try to get some gain. ARRL should not penalize HOA
residents that attempt to do the best they can in a hard situation.

Kind of like Tribander and Wires. Makes me laugh. No way I could put up a Tribander or high wires,
let alone a dipole.

Anyway, the broad prohibition of multiple elements for limited antennas seems unfair. The limited
antennas overlay allows long wires of unlimited length, and they provide gain.

This was my first ARRL DX CW Contest. Sometimes it was like
shooting fish in a barrel and other times not so much. In
particular, very early Sunday morning conditions were not ideal
and many of the stations I was hearing I had already worked the
day before. I was able to spend more time Sunday afternoon,
primarily on 10 and 15 meters and this was extremely productive.
I found it strange that so many stations used very odd power
abbreviations. I made the choice to log what I heard rather than
try to interpret them. Some are real easy to figure out but NN,
73 and several others made me shake my head. All of my contacts
were S&P. Over all it was very enjoyable. Locals that I heard
were K4XL, N3MN, NJ4Q, NN4RB, N2QT and W4WWQ.

N4NM
Boy, was that ever fun! Larry, K4AB, had sent a note suggesting a few niche classes for this
contest, and I have to thank him for the suggestion of Ten Meter QRP, as an orphan class. QRP can be
a drudge, especially when conditions are poor, but it can be a delight when the band is hot, as it
was this weekend. I remember sometimes thinking smugly, "I bet you'd be surprised if I told you I
was running only 4.75 watts". It was, nevertheless, still challenging; and most Qs required fingers
crossed. But I was pleasantly surprised at how "normal" it felt. I was even able to get a run going
for an hour or so on Sunday morning when signals were strong enough; and I had a nice battle with
KY8Q on the contest scoreboard...our scores were only a few Qs apart for most of the test. That sure
makes it exciting, and it's a great incentive to stay in the chair.

Many thanks for the great patience from other ops, who hung in through noise and QSB to complete the
tough ones. It's a reminder that radiosport is unique among competitive events in that success
depends on helping one's competitor!

outstanding. I could S&P with good results and even call CQ and
get some answers. Sunday morning I only lasted 90 minutes on the summit

This was the best ARRL CW DX contest propagation condx in years at my South Florida Atlantic Coast

I was using Elecraft K3/100 and just different INDOOR (!) wire antennas in the attic of the house
(no permanent antenna installation allowed outside). Actually i have one wire antenna for 80 m, two
fan dipoles in different directions and two moxon wire beams for 20 and 15 m roughly to USA
direction. One fan dipole can be used for East/West directions from 40-10 m and the other from 10-20
m for North/South directions. All antennas can be quick selected from the shack.

DXLOg says TIME ON was 21:26 hrs.

Well i have just reviewed the past weekend (2024 ARRL DX Contest CW) and i am still more than
impressed with the exceptionally good shortwave propagation over the weekend in general and at 80 m
(probably also at 160 m) in particular! I'm actually completely deaf at 80 m, but at 160 m it's
senseless, the antenna is a dummy load 😉!

I actually don't have a really usable antenna at 80 m and yet I still got 38 (!) contacts in my log
with the USA and Canada. Even my CQ calls in the 80 m band were returned to me by several stations
one after the other - and that with my "dummy load" 😮!

Tnx to Victor VA2WA who had great ears ... he came back to my CQ call on 80 m and was spotting me in
the cluster (i didn´t know that because i was unassisted during the contest) so that´s why i even
got more stations in my log on 80 m!

I'm amazed that it even worked with such a bit of wire and at times it didn't work too badly! Yes,
ok, the operating time probably also plays a significant role, but I can't remember ever having it
go as smoothly and well as this weekend at 80 m!

It would be great if you could look at and analyze the scenario of the weekend - especially
regarding 80 m from OE to USA/Canada. Above all, WHAT happened so GREATLY well that the band
conditions were so magnificent at 80 m! There is already hope that i will still be able to get the 5
band DXCC finally ...

In addition to the usual disturbances that start slowly in the morning (usually on weekends too) at
80 m (I would also be interested to know what kind of QRM this actually is), the band was noticeably
not very "noisy"!

I suspect that it has something to do with the sun and subsequently with the earth's magnetic field,
but unfortunately I have far too little idea about it. Also the loss in the different layers was
maybe very low this time ... so signals were loud most of the time or possible to work for me at
least!

Just because a lot of stations were QRV because of the contest, that definitely wasn't it alone. Of
course it helps when lot of stations are active ... anyway i don't think I've ever heard so many
loud and clear CW signals on 80 m from the USA/Canada before.

It would be ideal if there is a clear rule, so to speak, if the sun and the earth's magnetic field
show this or that constellation. If you knew this in advance, you could prepare for more difficult
conditions much better. I suspect that the low bands 160 and 80 m are very similar.

I also made MP3 files of the stations I worked on because I've rarely been able to enjoy something
like that before. After the ARRL Contest log submission deadline, I will probably publish a video or
individual MP3 files so that you can see what is still possible with a de facto "almost no
antenna".

I would be really happy if there were any ideas and/or suggestions on the topic - so far I have
neglected 80 m a bit, but I think this band will probably keep me a little more busy now ... i´m
hooked again 😉

Tnx a lot for all contacts - especially on 80 m!

Thanks for a nice contest! Propagation was pretty good, the upper
bands being open beyond the daylight hours and with some nice openings
to west-coast from European polar region! Nice to hear so many good

stations could pick up the signal from my very modest station!
Thanks for a nice contest and hopefully we see again next year!

This was my third ARRL DX CW from Greenland. 2022 was awful. 2023 was better -- but 2024 was
amazing! No green fairies in the sky this time!
I've learned a lot since I started contesting from OX back in 2018. It remains the silliest place to
go if ya wanna win anything. Propagation is extremely sensitive to even the smallest disturbances
from the sun. Usually I get at most five or so mults on TopBand - 80 isn't much better. Not this
time though!
We were blessed with a quiet sun. No aurora, no CMEs, no blackouts. I couldn't have wished for more.
Lots of fun on Saturday. Slower on Sunday. To be expected. I thoroughly enjoy the challenge as well
as providing the OX mult in the ARRL and CQWW CW contests. This particular contest has always been
special to me. It's a fun chase - I had all US states and all provinces (lacking the territories
except YT) withing the first three hours. That told me that it was gonna be good. I was right! I'll
have to do something pretty drastic to improve the station if I am ever to break 5 million. This
time I got almost 4 and I am happy and satisfied.
The station I'm working from has largely simple wire antennas and 1 kW. It is situated 300 aASL,
which is wonderful and likely makes up for some what's missing in the antenna department. Despite
the frustrations over the ofttimes misbehaving Evil Day Star - and all the hard work in -35 C to get
it all up and running - I keep coming back and I cannot wait for the next one!
Thanks to everyone who called and answered!

Due to time constrains only able to participate 1 night.
The night from Saturday to Sunday was the lucky one.
Saturday evening added the 160M extention coil to the 80M inverted-L antenna.
Last year, it took the whole night to log 1 station due to the local noise level.
This year , I was more lucky, the first 2 stations were in the log before 00:00 UTC.
After 27 qso's Jack (man with the) Hammer entered the shack around 07:30 local.
Plan is to improve the stations RX for next years edition.
Diversity RX (nvis and short vertical) was a step forward this year.
Station: K3 + KPA500 + inv-L for 80M + Extention coil

So, this was the first time I entered a log for the ARRL DX CW contest. Spend about 4 1/2 hours,
mainly on 10 and 15 meters. Bands were nice and open, but it’s not easy getting trough with a
simple endfed longwire. My goal was to make 100 qso’s and that worked out. I had fun and I’ll be
back next year with a better antenna.

PA3GVI
From the city where noise is high. Using 400 watt and a doublet( inverted V style) with the apex at
30 feet and legs sloping down to 10 feet from the ground.
Main bands were 40/20/15 with little effort on 10 and 80. Conditions seem pretty good. Many
west-coast coming through really nice and I was able to make 594 contacts with overal just a couple
states and VE-provinces missing. Great to see so much CW activity. Enjoyed it!

Still FUN after 50 years of operation! I made something over 1000 QSOs in 18 hours on 15M, all US
States (I am missing only Canadians: NT, NU, YT! A lot of OR, WA, and CA with FB sigs were on!
In the future, I'll work just for fun. A lot of stations use more than "illegal" power (2X 4kW is
usual, but 10-20kW AMPs are often in use !!) (does not matter that SO are MO !)
73 and GL Leo S50R

S50U
The goal was 1 QSO more than last year but unfortunately it didn't
work out. Reasons why not went according to plan is most probably
because the operator is 1 year older. :-) There will be some really
big scores, thanks everyone for the QSO. Roll on Cycle 25!

S51J
Working from S50E contest location, using equipment from there,
like FTDX10, antenna 40MDY2, passband filter (because Leo-S50R,
was working on 15m) and computer with N1MM+ logger. Amplifier was
mine SPE Expert 1.3-FA, set to 500W, for security reason, not to
blow finals again HI! Unfortunately, antena rotator didn't work
(probably winter damage), so antena was directed toward north all
the time. Crazy situation! But where there is a will there is a
way!

S53WW
Was hoping for better runs and more QSOs.
Aluminum tubes for 2x 5el. yagi only arrived on Wednesday prior to the contest.

Thanks to the great team (s51rm, s53rm, s53mm, s55oo, s57z), antennas were build
and mounted on the tower by the Friday noon.

Simulating the path toward the USA with TA suggested that the best combination
of the antenna heights would be at 6m and 12m AGL. Terrain actually slopes
downhill 5m from the tower, from 400m ASL very steep down to the valley at 50m
ASL, another two 250m ASL ridges 4km and 5km away, and then drops in the sea at
7km. TA said that on average the 12m antenna would perform worse then the 6m
antenna, and putting antenna at 15m would be even worse. In particular, even the
low angles would be the same as on the 6m antenna.

So I decided to run a little experiment and operate in vertical angle diversity
mode. On TX I used SM and always TXed on both antennas. On RX I bypassed SM and
fed the cables into the FTDX101 synced receivers (audio output set to SEPARATE).
I wanted the learn about signal dynamics, angle separation (would it help during
pileup) and to verify TA result on low angles. The outcome of the experiment was
very interesting to me. In short, bulk of the signals (90%) arrived well
(=almost equally) on both antennas and were steady. I would say 10% of the
signals had fast changes in the vertical angle of arrival - the extreme one was
station from Ohio, where O came on low antenna and H on high antenna. In only
few cases the signal was present (hearable) on only one antenna. And west coast
(=low angles) was better on high antenna (contrary to what TA suggested).

Long live ionosphere!

CQ all the time and made 200+ QSO without problems. This time I spent 15 minutes on 15 meters doing
the same run while the rest was S&P for friends. Excellent conditions but I never touched 160m band
despite N1MM Logger RED warnings. I just read the rules to claim my tribander as advanced antenna.

Amazing activity and propagation to North America on 28 MHz!

My intention was to set up a testbed to simulate and verify remote operation over 4G, before I move
the radio to its target location. Since I no longer have antennas at home QTH, I decided to build a
quick and dirty, "temporary by design" 2-element wire Yagi at the last minute on Friday afternoon.

Day 1 was a lot of fun. I enjoyed a 40-minutes run period with stations responding to my 100W signal
from as far and wide as ME to CA at the same time!
Day 2 seemed harder, with fewer new stations to work and little return for my CQ runs, but I was
happy to confirm those last possible multipliers at last.

In my opinion, contests like this create the most magical moments of amateur radio. Thank you for
all the contacts!

This operation was single op, low power, from Cape Cod MA, rather than my normal NJ QTH. We’ll
see how many got the correct location in the exchange. The antenna was a temporary ¼ wave vertical
for 20-15-10 with some short radials on the ground, and an inside the attic inverted vee for 40. It
was nice to see good propagation and lots of activity on the higher frequencies. Once again, thanks
to everyone who worked to pull the W2NTN signal through, and thanks to ARRL for making this event
happen.

Huge 10 and 15 meter openings to EU which just doesn't happen here in the desert. Was able to run a
bunch of
EU stations from my small Las Vegas lot with just 100 watts and an end fed wire with the highest
point at 22 feet.

W3BBO
Very pleased with my setup. A K3 running at 60 watts to the gutter/downspout on the house.
Unfortunately this compermised antenna doesn't like 15 meters, but worked well on 10, 20 and 40
meters.

W3GX
Heard numerous stations Saturday afternoon running frequencies,
calling CQ TEST over and over with their 30-40 word per minute
auto-keyers. They went several minutes with few responses from
hunting atations. I've been at this for a year and yet cannot
copy faster than 10 words per minute so I had no way of
responding to what sounded like noise. I could have logged QSOs
for myself and earned points for these folks if they had just
slowed their auto-keyers for SOME of the time. Instead, there
was no contest participation for me and fewer then optimum points
for the speed demons. Amateur contestors love to analyze and
graph every statistic under the sun, e.g., QSO rate per hour,
countries by the hour, QSOs per band, multipliers, and more.
Someday, a contestor will write in Contest Journal how he or she
made a percentage of his or her CQs at slower word-per-minute CW
speeds and how this strategy INCREASED his or her TOTAL QSOs (and
points) by involving the less-than-NASCAR-rated CW operators,
whose call signs otherwise wouldn't have been logged. He or she
will be hailed as "a CW Contest Pioneer" and "an Out-of-the-Box
Thinker." He/she will present slide shows to RATPAC and RSGB.
His/her "Speed Cycling" approach to contesting will be discussed
at contest club meetings and copied by many who strive for new
ways to boost their scores. You heard it here first. Feel free
to steal this idea and (hurry so you can) call it your own.
Meantime, I will continue my (painfully) slow progress toward
real 20-25 wpm (without any help from CW contests along the way).

The modest all-wire W3HKK antenna farm produced my all-time high score - EVER! - after 68 years on
the air, all with the same call, and 25 hours in the chair ( no small feat for an 82 yo
mind/body.)

This was truly a memorable contest, with memorable propagation. Im sure, many of you out there are
thinking the same thing! A moment to remember!

10m was my main band (Moxon at 22') and working BD3AX, BD4QA, BD1KV, and BA5CW within minutes of
each other Friday night was al all-time feat!

But using modest 2 el vertical phased arrays for 20 and 40m brought in some pleasant surprises,
too:
- hearing a loud 9N7AA on 20m Fri night, then working him thru the massive pile up was a thrill.
Then,Sunday mid-afternoon hearing Thailand, E28AM and working him through another pile up was
another memorable qso.

Then Sunday morning around 3 am local time, on 40m, working ZD7W, CB0ZW and 3D2AG....back to back
to back was amazing!

But while this was an all-time contest score for W3HKK, it could have been much better, Friday
night my N1MM+ logging program suddenly lost all incoming spots!!! So I lost the ability to scan
the band and look for new mults for the rest of the contest. I can only imagine how much better
the mults would have been without that glitch, undoubtedly caused by stray rf. I also had to pause
operations several times when the mouse stopped "mousing". Fortunately I could restore mouse
function by unplugging the mouse and replugging it. which I had to do a half-dozen times.

I decided to reorganize the operating desk a few days before the WWDX test, which likely
introduced the rf issue.

My you-know-what was "dragging" during the final hours of the test. Kudos to the ops who managed
to put in the max operating time allowed. I couldnt do that even in my younger days.

But its a blast trying! 73 de Bob

This was fun. I had set three goals for myself: 1. To make at least 1,000 QSOs; 2. To score at
least 1M points; and 3. To do it all without calling a single CQ! This entire weekend was just S&P.
I'm sure I could have made lots more contacts and had a bigger score had I done some running, but I
wanted to see if reaching my goals was even possible. It was, and I had a blast doing it.

My grandson Jake (KA4JAM) is 13 years old and less than 2 years
with license. He was completely remote from NC to my Flex 6600 as
well as Mike W9RNY in IL, while I was local. We ran a zoom
session the entire time and used N1MM chat window. His first
major contest and he not only participated, but did a lot of the
running. I was a little concerned about letting him run, as I
didn't want to overwhelm him. Boy was I wrong. Jake asked to
run and we let him dive right in. He stayed in the hot seat for
hours at a time, while Mike and I watched in amazement. At 13,
he's already doing what world class ops are doing. He made our
first and last QSO of this contest! This contest was a blast.
Every band was amazing from working lots of 5 watt stations in EU
on 80 meters to the huge JA runs on 10-15 meters for hours. I
was also surprised by the 0600z openings to EU on 20 meters. Ops
with 100 watts were well over S9. Incredible conditions and I am
sure many records will bust. Thank you to everyone that made
this one memorable for grandpa and grandson!

Had little time due to family obligations. Turned on radio Sat eve and hadn't even hooked up to
laptop, or downloaded logger yet. Heard KL7RA, and ironically, he may be last state (Alaska) that I
need for WAS, something I didn't expect in a DX contest. Didn't want to take a chance of losing him
while I set everything up. Called and worked him with my straight key and logged on paper. After I
set things up, transferred to regular logger. Was so happy, was ready to shut down after that one
QSO. Achieved all my goals in 1 minute of operating.

With the sunspots being in decent shape, I decided to go 10 Meter QRP
for the DX CW contest from the New York City Long Island section. I
used a simple 10 Meter dipole up 18 feet in a tree (please see photo),
which is nothing very special, but still effective.

To me, QRP operation on one band such as Ten Meters is an adventure,
and some surprises came. In comparison to last year when I did low
power on 10 Meters for the event, I managed to come close to my
overall multiplier count, but fell a bit short in total number of
QSOs.

Europe was very good early Saturday and Sunday morning, beginning at
6:30 AM local time, with Saturday being the best of the two days. I had a decent QSO run of 36 QSOs
in one hour for my QRP setup beginning at 7:00 AM on Saturday.

Some of the rare multipliers were above 28.1 MHZ, and I heard 7Q6M
from Malawi at noon local time on 28.144 but very weakly, beyond the
capability of my QRP signal at this point. Fortunately, no major
pileup developed and about 45 minutes later, his signal was louder and
he was able to hear my QRP signal. Thank you Don!

I heard Japan all three evenings here and was surprised at the
signals. I was finally able to work JH7QXJ and JF1NHD about 20
minutes before the end of the contest, and they were both pretty
strong. I can only imagine what my QRP signal must have sounded like
there and there was only one repeat of my callsign! Thank you guys!

A shout-out to the New Zealand operators, Zl3X, ZM4T and ZL4TT for
pulling out my QRP signal during the evening hours here. Hope for the
same next year!

Great band conditions this weekend makes for a fun contest.
Many of the 50 and 100 Watt stations were just as loud as the KW stations.
I had two dupes because of their lousy CW sending. I wish people would not play with the CW dot-dash
ratios so much.
Thanks for our QSOs.

Because of my wife’s health concerns I was unable to participate fully in this great contest. I
did find my time actually spent in this contest really does take your mind off other concerns as
this requires total concentration. Also, hoping to get my DXCC via LOTW…I’m only two countries

This is my first DX contest. I did not figure out that I was supposed
to record the power until the end. I guess I do not get any credit
for most of the QSOs, but I had fun anyway. ;>

I was using a homebrew 40m xcvr incorporating the xmtr from QST May
1978 page 16 and June 1978 page 25. The rcvr is my own direct
conversion design. Power output is 10 W (not quite QRP).

I eagerly looked forward to this year's ARRL DX CW contest. I am a casual contester who prefers CW
contests and usually operates in the QRP category, relying on my Elecraft KX2 paired with a Hustler
All-band Vertical antenna. This setup has often landed me within the top 5 in my state and section.
However, I challenged myself for this year's event by competing in the Low-Power category, using my
FTDX-10 and the trusty Hustler Vertical antenna.
Operating in the early evening of the opening day, I found the bands in excellent condition,
primarily focusing on 20m and 40m frequencies. The airwaves were alive with activity, with huge
signals from seasoned contest operators operating super-stations worldwide.
The FTDX-10, equipped with its superior built-in filtering and sensitivity, proved to be a joy to
operate in this environment. With the FTDX-10's adjustable IPO (Intercept Point Optimization), APF
(Audio Peak Filtering), and adjustable DNR (Digital Noise Reduction) filter, many weak stations
previously buried in the noise became readable. Leveraging the radio's memory channels and wireless
mouse interface, I minimized the need to manually key in Morse code, maintaining a steady speed
between 30 to 35 wpm.
Communicating with Europe from the Northeast posed no significant challenge, and I was pleasantly
surprised to establish contacts spanning over 8,000 miles, including a “new one” in Thailand.
While working Asia from New England presented its challenges, I successfully contacted stations in
Japan, China, Australia, Antarctica, New Zealand, and several South Pacific islands. Another bonus
of working in this contest is that some rare entities, usually only found in DXpeditions, like Juan
Fernandez Island and St. Helena Island, were readily available on multiple bands during this
contest.
Utilizing the N3FJP ARRL International DX Contest logging software on my computer proved invaluable,
offering a user-friendly interface and seamless integration with the DX Cluster, enabling me to see
real-time band activity, log QSOs, and monitor my contest performance effortlessly.
By the end of the contest, I had logged 256 QSOs, earning 768 Q points with 176 Mults in just 12
hours on the air. The first 8 hours alone yielded over 85,000 points, with an additional 50,000+
points added in the final four hours, resulting in a total raw score of 135,168. With 256 QSOs
spanning 92 different countries. It's an achievement I'm proud of, considering my modest setup. Now,
I await the final score after any adjustments for "busted calls." LOL!

WQ6X
This is WQ6X's first ARRL Dx QRP run from Ramona.
This was a completely ad-HOC remote operation first from Alameda
on Friday evening and then from Concord on Saturday & Sunday.
While it rained and poured everywhere I went, staying indoors
to run Cw was the obvious solution.
Band conditions overall were AWEsome for this contest weekend.
When I could find a quiet "window", a non-inconsiderate amount of time
was spent running frequencies, until some KW station would move in on
top of me and call CQ. They obviously heard me because when I called
them they immediately came back to me. Whatever happened to LISTEN BEFORE
YOU TRANSMIT QRP stations have rights too.
I was amazed at how many MULTI-stations took time out to call me.
This year's ARRL DX GiG may well have been my best ever - despite

So late in my ham radio life, I have decided to start contesting. This is my third contest and my
operating skills are really improving. I have a long way to go but contesting is a great tool for
increasing one's operating skills and knowledge of propagation. It is also a tool for optimizing the
station equipment to enhance more effective and efficient radio operation. Now that I am retired I
have time to really involve myself in this fascinating part of the hobby.

My station setup:
IC-705 running 10W, GP antenna with elevated radials (above our salt water swimming pool :-)
Location 120m ASL hill side QTH at Bakoven, Cape Town, RSA. We got 180 degree sea view from 200 to
20 degrees.
I started to hear W/VE stations after 1100UT, but my 10 Watts did not get through the 13,000 km
path. Exception is K1LZ, which I logged at 1050UT. The good opening began at 1300UT and it became
fantastic just after our sunset at 1700UT. By then skimmers were picking up my signal from east
coast to west coast, from FL to BC.
It is very exiting feeling to have a pileup with 10 Watt and a minimalist antenna. My station was
probably running at the lowest power in the LP category.
I had great fun, thanks for the calls!
