Thanks to Dave, K1TTT, for the use of his First Class station!

AA2MA   [photo/doc]
1st time on 160m ever - and I've been licensed since 1974! Fabricated an EFHW using my existing
49:1 balun during the contest. Hopefully will be able to improve placement in the next weeks.

This is the first CW contest that I have ever entered. Not very many slow stations, so I used search
and ponce with assistance. I will strive to do better in the next one. I tried calling CQ for ten
minutes but had no luck and was spotted.

AG4EP
First time entry and only operated about 5.5hrs. I didn't know about
the "timely" requirement on logging til afterwards, so a few may be
minutes later than the operator with whom the exchange took place.
So
if that places this in the "checklog" status, so be it. Also used
HAMRS since that is what I am used to from POTA; so the "Field Day"
used "Class" but did not have an RST box for entry; so my 599's are
under class unless this converter converts its label.

AI7MW
Made my first two CW contacts!

AJ1G
Operated again as a stationary mobile from Stonington Point CT,about
five feet from the eastern end of 100 miles of Long Island Sound.
Equipment used was a 100 watt IC-7100 transceiver to a homebrew 20
foot base loaded vertical stationary mobile antenna mounted on the
2012 Toyota Tacoma 4x4. I call the antenna the "DX Skimmer" because
it is made from a 16 foot (two 8 foot telescopic sections) aluminum
tubing swimming pool skimmer handle, topped with a 4 foot Hamstick
stinger. As on previous stationary mobile operations, no external
radials were used, just the truck body for a counterpoise. The pool
skimmer handles are sold around here in Ocean State Job Lot discount
stores for about 20 dollars, and often less than that at the end of
the summer. Only was able to operate for a few hours before sunrise
on Saturday morning, and for a fairly long overnight session Saturday
night/Sunday morning. As I've observed during previous 160 contests
from the Point, good propagation to the west continued for well over
an hour past local sunrise. Around midnight Sunday morning a cold
front blew in with westerly wind gusts over 40 mph and snow showers,
the truck was rocking and ended up plastered with salt spray from the
waves breaking on the rocks. Ended up with 318 QSOs and 63
multipliers, made it out to the West Coast, down to a few St.
Somewheres, and almost to Hawaii, sounded like KH6AQ responded to one
of my CQs, but I did not copy a response to my exchange. Maybe in
the Stew Perry or CQWW 160! Conditions were much better than the
previous two ARRL 160 contests.

Logging note - Encountered error on trying to log the 2 (for region
2 of AA7JV/MM's exchange, Had to manually edit it in on the ARRL web site. The WA7BNM Cabrillo file
generator program didn't know what to do with that in the section field, so I deleted it from the
initial submission and added it in on an error correction at ARRL.

Update - For those of you who worked AA7JV/MM Region 2 in the contest, I emailed him to find out
where he was. George responded to me that he was in grid DJ76, about 1500 miles west of Panama in
the Pacific! He is one of the principals of the RIB (Radio In a Box) DXPedition Project, apparently
on his way to or from a RIB Project DX activation. He was by far the best DX I worked in the
contest, 160 mobile to maritime mobile!

73 and ZUT, Merry Christmas and a Happy New
Year to all, de Chris AJ1G Stonington, CT

Rather serious participation, despite the geographical location which is not ideal for this contest.
As usual on this band, the QRN very present in the ICZ - Intertropical Convergence Zone
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intertropical_Convergence_Zone) - hinders reception quite a bit, and
forces several repetitions. Thanks to Didier FY5FY who deployed the (temporary) radials around the
antenna on Friday afternoon.

I went to Dominican Republic last month to do maintenance on my Remote Station,
I also added a 160m Linear loaded Inv L antenna because of the small space area
on my property for the purpose of participating in this contest.
I could've done better if propagation would've not been so bad and my station
would've not been so limited.

Thanks to all that were able to make contact with me.

K3CCR
K3CCR is the club station at the Collington continuing-care
retirement community at FM 18OW in MD, just east of DC. For 2024
ARRL 160 M I (N3UM) was the only CW op available; I did SOHP U. I
hoped to beat my 2023 ARRL 160 M score claim of 69.07 K. I did,
with 1.062 X the Q points & 1.21 X the mults for 1.29 X my 2023
score claim. At start 2200-0119Z I ran for 203 Qs at 88/hr, & 43
sect mults + PJ2. Then 0029-0211Z I clicked spots & got a decent
rate; 42 Qs in 42 min, 60/hr. After a 16-min. BK, still 60/hr; 30
Qs in 30 min, 0128-0158Z. Then 0200-0412Z, rate died; just 47 Qs
in 2.2 hrs, 25/hr, but 8 sect mults out to AB, NE, SJV, & EB, + 3
ctys. I ran again 0416-0520Z for 70 Qs at 66/hr out to NTX & AZ,
but got no mults. So I took a 22-min BK hoping the bandmap would
refill. Then 0542-0604Z I scraped up 12 last Qs + ID & OR mults,
and quit to sleep. Back on 2143-2243Z I ran for 40 Qs & ONN; N to
QC, S to WCF. Then 2248-2357Z I clicked for 21 Qs in 69 min, 18/hr
but no mults. Running was better; 68 Qs + MS at 42/hr 2359-0135Z.
Rate died; I clicked again 0142-0209Z. Got WTX, but SLOW; 9 Qs in
27 min. So I took a 53-min BK to let bandmap refill. I clicked red
spots to get mults 0302-0442Z. Most sigs weak or absent; got just
14 Qs + VP5, PAC, ND, BC, & MB. Many spots of EUs, but I never
heard one, just W1s & VEs working them. From 0501-0552Z I went
just for Qs. I got 17, MDC to AZ + 1 last mult, XE. Kp always FB,
1-1.7; maybe weak sigs were from thick D layer due to SFI of 180.

K6NR
I operated the 160 meter contest remotely from near Williams, Arizona.
My station in the California desert has become very noisey; during
CQ WW CW I was listening to 80 from there and it sounded near dead.
Lots of noise, a few stations barely rising above it. I listened from
Arizona and 80 sounded a lot like 20, alive with signals from all
over. Doesn't hurt that I have a full size NE beverage on our
Arizona property, along with 3 "BOG" antennas in other directions.

At any rate, 160 sounded great during the contest, and I was able to
work the majority of stations I heard. It was clear some had their
own QRN to contend with (strong but unable to copy me). Best DX was
getting a call from CR3DX when I was CQing. I heard a G4 but he
unsurprisingly couldn't hear me.

Thanks for the QSOs, Dana

Station: Elecraft K4 and KPA500, 500 watts to an inverted L up
about 30 feet over 16 short and a few longer radials.

K7QA
Condx much better than expected but brutal QSB and lots of ESP sigs. East coast
workable here at 0100Z. Got Qs with all the DX heard. Lots of JA and a DU but no
EU, altho a few spotted. PJ2, FM5, FY5, TI7, XE2, ZF9, KP4 and VP5. 3 KH6 and 3
KL7. Dave, KH6AQ was a loud beacon here. Rather low activity with tons of
unanswered CQs.

My Wife and I had a lot of fun Camping at the headquarters of Mount
Monadnock in a tent and operating an old MFJ wire dipole that was
almost 100 yards long strung up in the trees. I activated the POTA
park three times during the contest on 160 CW because the exchange
was
basically the same. This was my first time making a contact on 160
meters and it was a terrific experience finding the Band open at
night
and very quiet during the day. Our challenge was to heat up the tent
with a my buddy propane heater because it was 18 degrees outside at
night and stay up late tapping code in the mostly deserted
campground.
Such a fun adventure and I am looking forward to doing it again.

I was on from home, loaded up rain gutter on house to hand out a few
contest Qs. On around 0300 UTC with TS-850 barefoot. Many California
stations were pretty strong. Logged K7RAT OR.

I copied several DX stations:

ZF9CW (very strong), KP4AA (solid signal) and FM5BH. Successful with
ZF9CW and KP4AA Friday night. Saturday evening picked up PJ2T, VP5M
and AA7JV/mm. AA7JV/mm was very strong.

Signals from W1, W6 and W2 were relatively weaker.

N0NB
Elecraft K3 100, Palstar AT1500DT, doublet apex at 40 feet, ends at 25 feet fed with 450 ohm window
lead. Tlf logger for Linux running on Debian 12.

Band was quiet at this location with very few lightning crashes. Despite a relatively high SFI,
KH6, KP4, PJ2, and ZF9 made it into my log. Not bad with my low doublet primarily intended for
local work. Also heard XE2 but quite weak and didn't hear me.

There seemed to be a dearth of west coast stations. Midwest and east coast were well represented.
Kansas section was well represented as a number of fellow Kansans entered my log.

This is usually an event I don't miss but it has been several years since I participated due to real
life intruding each year.

Good contest. I only operated for 4 hours on Friday because I needed to leave at 4 am to be a
vendor at the Silver Springs, Ocala, FL, hamfest. Then another four hours on Saturday evening after
we got back at 8 pm and needed sleep after midnight. We had lots of power line QRN, and never heard
EU on the inverted L. No room for a beverage here!

I had everything ready early for this one but could not start on
time because we were watching the livestream from Las Vagas of my
Granddaughter playing in her DIII Soccer National Championship
Semi Final game for Christopher Newport University. (We lost!
) I am claiming the Granddad exemption! I finally got going for
a little while after the game Friday evening. Since I am an early
riser, I had no problem getting up early to operate until about
sunrise both mornings. I got a lot of code practice copying the
same callsigns over and over as I traveled up and down the band.
Many times, I was left with noone new to work. I need a better
160-meter antenna. My lone country was the Caymen Islands on
Sunday morning. It was fun hearing so many locals. Thanks for the
Qs.

You can make a lot of contacts on 160 with a low dipole

N5JJ
Had a good time, however to me the bands seemed in fair shape. Saturday evening was nothing but
dupes. Did work all states except Alaska and Rhode Island. Could not hear Alaska when they were
on. Did work several DX stations in the Carribean and Mexico. Never heard anybody else. My
antenna is a 160M double bazooka in an inverted vee, with the apex at the top of my first tower up
about 120 feet. Seemed to work well. Just put it up before the contest but needs a little work to
get the swr down in some areas of the band.

N6AN
I used the full sized 160 meter dipole at Caltech. This involved
getting security to let me onto the roof, walking through an air
handler locker to get to the antenna base, then identifiying the
correct coax. My Kx3 was putting out between 4 and 5 watts.
After an hour I decided I'd breathed enough mystery air from the
fume hood exhausts so I packed up and went home.

N6DW
Antenna was an 80m dipole at 40 feet. After the first 50 feet of coax there was a manual tuner
which could reduce the SWR to 3 and further matched by the KAT500 autotuner. Surprised that I had
any signal at all.

Decided to put a significant effort into this contest. S&P the
full time. Was able to work come Carribean and some EU on
Saturday, but made primarily domestic contacts. Plenty of
activity and good conditions kept this fun.

N9TF   [photo/doc]
Almost didn't make the contest. The 160 portion of the 6BTV developed
a problem Wednesday night before the contest when the SWR on that radiator
shot to 10:1. Apparently, where the 18 guage wire radiator passed through
the PVC conduit spacer near the 6BTV feed point, had gotten pinched badly
over time and had developed an open at that point. After several hours trouble
shooting the problem in 30mph winds and 25 degree temps, the culprit was found
and a new 3' section of 18 gauge wire was added in line with better strain
relief, and all was good. Beat last years score and had fun in control of
a few decent runs. Even got called by PJ2T who was a rock solid S9!
Always a fun contest to end the year with. 73 Gene N9TF

A few hours here and there. Some stations calling CQ either had high local noise or were just

difference! Now I want to put up another 160 antenna!

NO2D
Log includes ZF9KW. Call does not appear in QRZ.com. So must be
a busted call on my part. Closest to it is ZF9CW, a ham in

VK3TZ
Had a night out on Saturday night (great band with 80s aussie
hits and crowd) and came home a bit under the weather ;), but
160m was somewhat open. 2 QSOs. Sunday night was interesting good
signals early but seemed to die off as approached SR on the East
Coast. Heard DU0A well, and ZF9CW was pounding in for at least 90
minutes - he would have been a new DXCC for me but either
couldn't hear me or was steadfast for the USA calls, which is
fair enough. Boy would like to finally crack DXCC, sitting at 97
cfd and 101 worked. Could not copy Ken KP4AA despite listening
at his SR. Also would be a new one, but perhaps in the CQWW 160m
CW. Went to bed too early to catch any KH6s or the East coast.
It was an interesting test for the RX antennas, I am in suburbia
on 1/4 acre lot in a city of 5million people, a single inv L but
the RX antennas are the main thing to improve. I usually use my
40m rotatable dipole (about 12.5m tip to tip) and it
significantly reduces nearby neighbor LED light noise when end-on
to it. But a 5 turn vertical loop about 60cm diameter was hearing
better at times, this has not been the case before. It is 7m up
and quite small. A larger horizontal 5 turn loop is up too, but
got attacked by birds and is faulty so couldn't do any
comparisons. Looks by the scores I only worked the super
stations who are all at the top or near top of their respective
classes. Most were good 10dB or more S/N, some difficulty due to
lightning crashes on night 2. The scope SDR makes it much easier
to find signals for us DX during this test, well worth it.
Enjoyed the test, only 2 or 3 stations I heard but could not
work. I think the solar X class flare on night 2 killed it for DX
after around 1130z.

Tnx VO1HP for alerting me to the test. Lots of fun barefoot

Generally found the band noise level to be low. Lots of signals, especially early-on, but no EU.
Best DX was JA. Also KH6 and ZF. New calls got harder and harder to find on Sunday AM. All Qs had
great CW ops and made this contest a real pleasure to work.

Goals for this contest:

1. Work as close to the full period as possible.

2. Approach my best QSO total of 690

3. Exceed 500 QSOs

I ended up stopping while there were a couple of hours of non-daylight. The last
three hours were 42 QSOs, so I ran out of steam. First night I had some coffee,
which these days is not such a good idea. Second night was tea, which was much
better for the system.

QSO total of 516 is not bad, but I think getting a late start due to family
events was part of that and I think conditions were not as good throughout as
say in the ARRL CW DX earlier in the year, where I picked some Europeans. This
year I didn't hear any.

I did exceed 500 QSOs.

Throughout the contest there was an unusual (for my experience with 160) QSB.
Often signals that started out a solid S5 would completely disappear by the end
of the exchange. This was much worse the second night.

The rig is an Elecraft K3S with winkeyer and TLF log software. The antenna is a
full-length Vanuatu dipole at 15 feet high at the highest point, with an RBOG
that doesn't seem to be working very well.

Thanks for all the Qs and the repeats.

The work to reconstitute my 160m antenna did
not get finished by Friday night. The weather
during the day on Saturday was decent and that
allowed me to finish. I could work anything I could
hear between the Rockies and the Atlantic, so I'm
well-pleased. Thanks for the QSOs and 73, Ron (W8RU)

Very quiet conditons and a lot of weak signals.

I was told over the years that you can't transmit over a snake antenna. Well, I did anyway and used
it during this contest. The old adage about wire antennas is true to form and so I increased the
length until it reached 250 feet from assorted coax I had lying around the shack. I connected the
center conductor of the coax in the shack to one side of my W2FMI 4:1 balun and then to my new
MFJ-948 tuner, which somehow, I managed to buy brand new, to the amazement of fellow BARA members. I
ran 5 watts the entire contest and also enjoyed DX'ing the top half of the AM broadcast band. The
snake antenna basically is placed on the ground but was raised up in spots using some firewood, wire
spools, yard furniture etc. I look forward to the Stew Perry towards the end of this month. 73 Dan

I had fun fun, with good low noise band conditions. Plan to
participate here again next year, and I am hoping to get more QSO
contacts toward the 4 (southern) call section states - unfortunately
with my short length dipole antenna.

Nice contest. Tried extended-length BevFlex-4x Beverage for first time. 500W with Ameritron. Limited
operation due to operator fatigue and COVID.

Hi all, Limites time here.Just on to give out some Q's. Used a coil shortened 75ft wire tied tied in
at the base of my Grnd. mounted Butternut HF6V. Ran 100 watts from Yaesu ftdx-3000.

NoT having 160-meters in Ramona, I was offered the phasing-cable crippled
horizontal Tri-Square at WA6TQT's QTH in Anza. Altho crippled, at ~100' in
height, it would seem that I had access to 3 bi-directional dipoles - KINDA.
I dialed back the K3/0 mini combo to 5-watts and called CQ a LoT, noting the
RBN information. Unfortunately, many KW-Amp operators would move in on the
run frequency without FIRST inquiring QRL
It would seem that WQ6X signals failed to materialize in Call Areas 1, 2, 3.
Even the RBN radios could not hear me.
Nevertheless, it was fun tooling around noting my signal levels on several SDR's.
